I knew it wasn't huge, but I thought it got a pretty solid fandom. It's got tons of possibilities.

It's got a lot more casual viewers, I think. People who watch but just watch and talk about it.

I know. I mean, the fandom isn't tiny or anything, but the response to fic is so much less than in the other fandom I write for (which, admittedly, is Avengers, which has probably spoiled me for all other fandoms).

There is a pretty large fandom. Just probably not producing the type of fanworks that you want. Like the Avengers fandom is HUGE on fanart. The SPN fandom is HUGE on fanfic. The Walking Dead is huge on fanvids. Hit youtube and you'll find the fandom. Thousands of The Walking Dead fanfilms, fantrailers, fanvids. I think that's because it's a zombie show. There's something about zombies that lends itself more toward video than any other medium.

I feel the same way about Burn Notice. It also has a large viewership, but there's not a lot of fannish things coming out of it, except for maybe Michael/Fiona fanvids.

I love Burn Notice, but I've never felt motivated to produce fanworks for it, because it's always felt so... self-contained. It gives me everything I need from it (except possibly MORE, FASTER), so there are no holes I feel a need to fill in.

The characters are just too unlikable to fic about. Apart from poor Dale. I miss him.

idk, there's over 800 fic on Ao3 alone. I think it has more fic than most shows, even though it may not seem like it when you look at fandoms like Sherlock and Supernatural

Thought: if you're trying to boost awareness of a fanwork, it may be good to mention the name of it. It's apparently Walking Dead, but otherwise?

It's not just numbers, it's having fans who are motivated to create fanworks. Otherwise, you know, the Superbowl would have a fandom and it would be huge.

Yeah, basically this. I've had discussions with my friends about various shows/games/movies we're in to and how the fandoms are varied by each. Obviously the demographic that is being hit is going to have a lot to do with it, but in some cases fanwork gets created by a surprising branch of the fans. (Like one you didn't expect to exist.) I guess a good example of this is the whole MLP thing. (Because while young girls may be drawing pics of their favorite ponies, they're probably not posting them to the internet the way the older fans do.) An example nearer to my heart is the Metal Gear Solid fandom. While numbers-wise the fanbase for MGS is largely male, the fans who produce the fanfic? Largely female. (Which of course also affects the *type* of fic being written.)
I can't be sure about all viewers everywhere, but from what I've observed in my own little pocket of the world is that much of the viewer base for The Walking Dead is made up of people who are fans of the show, but not people who are into "fandom". They are people who turn the tv off at the end of an episode, are excited for next week's show, but it doesn't occur to them to hop online and look for fic or art or even discussion forums. They just hop on Facebook, post "OH MY GOD, WALKING DEAD! HOW COULD YOU????" and might enjoy a few comments from their friends, but that's it. Water cooler talk.
If you have friends like that, maybe use the show as an opportunity to get them into the fandom world? "Hey, now that the season is over, let me show you some cool stories that someone has written about what would have happened if XYZ...."?

Agreed. I also wish there was more fandom for the comics themselves.

Most of it seems to be on tumblr. There are a few communities here and there on LJ but they aren't very active from what I've seen, aside from the kink meme.
