I think the first time I ever had this argument was approx. 1988. When I was five. (are there people who think the reordering thing is new? Like, my elementary school friends practically divided into clans based on which order you read them in. And most of us were second generation defending the ways we learnt from our mothers...)

It's not new at all. My mom has a box set from the 1970s that puts The Magician's Nephew first. In fact, when I was old enough to read the books I distinctly remember her telling me to ignore the numbers and start with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Same! My copy is my dad's boxset from the 70s and it's in the new order and we read it in the old order...but when rereading it myself I prefer the new order.

My second-grade best friend and I had sets with different numbering. We quickly learned it was better not to discuss it with each other at all.
