You could... read them in any order you want? Or... buy one in the order you want?

I'm pretty sure this is an old fan upset at the changes rather then somebody who hasn't seen it yet.

I don't suppose it's worth pointing out that the "new" order is the author's preferred order? It's not like the publishers went, "oh, lol, let's just change things around for fun!"

I don't think it ruins the magic. I read The Magician's Nephew first (and it remains possibly-my-favorite in the series), and seeing Lucy find the wardrobe made me go, "OMFG I KNOW WHAT THAT IS! I RECOGNIZE THAT LAMPPOST! OMFG AWESOME!" rather than, "Huh?"

I picked up a used set that didn't have The Magician's Nephew in it, and it was the one that would have been labeled number one in that set, the one I bought later was labeled number 6 and I keep them in the right order on my bookshelf no matter what they say.

I think the first time I ever had this argument was approx. 1988. When I was five. (are there people who think the reordering thing is new? Like, my elementary school friends practically divided into clans based on which order you read them in. And most of us were second generation defending the ways we learnt from our mothers...)

Since it was Lewis himself who rejigged the order, you just have to accept Author's choice and call it canon. Or read them however you want. Up to you.

Personally I read Voyage of the Dawntreader followed by Last Battle, then the rest in any old order. I still loved them, so not sure it really matters.

I prefer the magic and wonder of the Magician's Nephew. I read that book over and over and ignored the other ones. I love the still pools in the forest, it's one of my favourite fantasy memories.

Go to a used bookstore? Seriously, they usually have a pretty decent selection of versions - at least the ones I've been to. There are also ones that only have the list in the front of the book - which is usually easy to ignore - and no numbers on the side.

I'm with you, OP. I know it's a silly thing to rage about and I don't usually get worked up about stuff like that but seeing the wrong order just makes me so angry! It's just not the saaaame!

My elementary school wins. They had books which had no numbers on the covers, and two lists: one for publishing order, one for chronological order. And, like, three copies of each book.

I first read the series in publishing order, and, you know what?

I agree with Lewis himself - it doesn't frigging matter which order you read them in. It works perfectly either way.

I got the box set with Magician's Nephew first in about fourth grade or something. In 1995. And it utterly did not detract from my enjoyment even slightly.

It doesn't read as a prequel-y book to me, either--it reads as a beginning. So you read them in whatever order and I'll read them in whatever order, I guess.

How old ARE you OP

'cause if you're old enough to remember this, then you're old enough to grow the fuck up

(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not this melodramatic about it, but I do prefer the former order. It was more fun for me to read TMN after LWW, and as things were happening go "OMG I know what's happening!! Omg I bet she's gonna be the witch!!!"

But then I love things that are in media res, the more in the deep end you throw me the better. (that's why my favourite Harry Potter fic ever opens with all the teachers fighting a Balrog. Because FUQ U THAT'S WHYYYYY)

I cringe at the numbers on the spines of Redwall books, though. Those do have a specific chronological order, and I can understand reading Redwall first (it's style is quite different from all the ones after it) it's just a mess to otherwise read them in publishing order. Mossflower first or go home.

This is so eerie. I just had a conversation today that turned into a debate on what order you should read the Hannibal Lecter saga. It's pretty much the same issue as the Narnia series: do you read it in the order that they were published, or chronological order? (And in both cases, it really has a big effect on how you view the characters and settings)

Anyways, I read Wardrobe first but that's because that was the first one I was introduced to in grade school. I don't really have a preference either way as to what order they should be read and I believe it should be a personal choice, but that one was certainly my favorite out of the entire series.

Read The Magician's Nephew's first, and it remains the only book I liked of the series.

Ehh, the first I ever heard of these books was that my grade 2 teacher read LW, then MN, then LB in class as the daily book reading session.

In that order.

I presume she did it in that order because she thought the details in MN were spoilery for LW.

I later read the books for myself, pretty much in the MN, LW, HB, PC, DT, SC, LB order, but I do think the way my teacher read them, leaving MN until after LW had it's effect on me.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This seems like a very small thing to worry about, to me. As long as you enjoy the series, does it really matter? I bought a large volume with all seven books in one and my kids and I are reading The Magician's Nephew first because according to the introduction in the book, that was the preferred order of the author. I mean, it isn't like they went through and re-wrote the books and changed anything, they just put them in the "right" order according to the man who wrote them.

I guess I just don't see the big deal.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
LOVE that edition's cover art!
