my housemate takes ridiculously long showers every day

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-03-24 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Like an hour to an hour and a half and it really pisses me off.

And she has really long thick hair that gets clogged in the drain and I HAVE to snake it out

It REALLY pisses me off and I want to confront her about it but my husband is friends/co-workers with her and I don't want to start drama

Not to mention that showering every day is pointless and not even good for your skin and hair (I could understand bathing a little every day once it starts to get hot here in Texas, to get the sweat off, but it's not necessary to take a full-on fucking shower every damn day)

What. Why can't you just casually say "hey, could you take your hair out of the drain after you shower please"? That's not starting drama, that's normal housemate interaction.

What you can't do is tell her not to shower every day. That would definitely start drama.

buy a little sieve-filter for the drain and get her to use it and clean it every time she washes her hair

or tell her to fucking snake it out herself since it's her hair

Um not everyone has the same type of skin/hair and I do have to take showers every day and I do take long showers. I shave in the shower and I have to wash my hair every day or it starts acting really weird. And TMI but I sweat a lot so if I don't shower every day it's GROSS. So just so you know, some people really do need to shower every day. Is it really horrible to be clean? Calm down.

So yeah, you may have to deal with the shower every day thing, but here is what you CAN do- ask her to clean the drain after her shower uses, and if it's at a time of the day that it's inconvenient for you maybe ask that you guys make a schedule? I always make schedules with room mates for shower time, especially knowing that I need the bathroom for a long time every day, I always warn about it ahead of time.

Yup, I gotta shower every day or I get all oily. Miss one shower, and I'm visibly greasy, especially my hair. Hell, even taking daily showers, by the end of the day I'm kinda oily anyway.

Is that what you want, OP? Do you want people like me to be oily all the time? Doubt it.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Is it really horrible to be clean?"

The question is, why can't you get clean in 20 minutes? Are you washing every body part three times in slo-mo? If you're as pokey about everything you do as you are about bathing, how on earth do you get schoolwork done or hold a job?

Some people need to shower every day if they want to maintain a non-offensive level of BO. Nice that you don't have to, but let's not pretend that everyone produces the exact same sweat, oils, and smells, all right? Compared to not frightening off everyone I deal with in customer service, I really don't give a damn about the horny layer or my hair.

1. Buy a cheap drain catcher.
2. Ask roommate to use it when she showers.
3. ????
4. Proceed to not want to chop off your roommate's hair while she sleeps.

IDK what you can do about the long showers, though, unless you're responsible for the hot water payments, at which point, you could probably tell her that she either needs to cut down on her shower time or else start paying more into it.

Buy one of those little plastic drain-seive things at the convenience store for $7 and nicely and casually show it to her and tell her how useful and easy to use it is. Put it in the shower. She'll use it. If she's somehow dumb enough not to use it when it's sitting right there, politely ask her to remember to use it.

IDK what your reason is for being pissed about her long showers, but if it's about water payments, show her the bill and ask her to pay more because she uses more, and if it's about inconvenience, ask her to sit down with you to work out a schedule where you don't wind up waiting outside for ages for her to finish up in order to do your thing.

As long as she is paying for the water she uses and plans to clean out her hair from the drain, why should you care how many showers she takes?

She probably thinks that you not taking showers every day is gross if she is that clean and, yet, you don't hear her complaining to you.

Reading the comments, I get that people's hair and skin are different, but even for anyone who has to shower every single day - is 1 - 1.5 hours really necessary? After shampooing, conditioning, shaving, scrubbing etc. I'd run out of things to do in the shower after like half an hour.

I know, I know, that's just me, but OP's housemate's showers still seem excessive.

Re: my housemate takes ridiculously long showers every day

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
1.5 hours is longer then I would typically be in a shower, but I could totally see myself in there for an hour.

I believe OP mentioned she had long hair, and hair of length and certain texture can take a long time to wash. My hair is not that long and it takes some time to wash everything out just because of my hair texture.

If you add shaving and washing it's easy for me to be 30-45 minutes.

If I haven't shaved in a while I could probably easily do 1.5 hours actually, but I am very tall and very hairy.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense if you don't shave daily, sure. But every day like OP's housemate still seems excessive.

my god, pray that you never live in a place that gets serious droughts. most people in the world cannot imagine pouring a 100-200 gallons of potable water down the drain every day.

It's really bad to wash your hair daily if it's thick or curly. I speak as someone with thick and curly hair and I have had every hairdresser in the world tell me this. Any website about hair will point this out. IT'S BAD FOR YOUR HAIR.

It takes like five minutes max to wash your whole body with soap and rinse it off.

da

I live with water restrictions, so I can only dream of showers that long

/wistfully day dreams and feels bad over 10-15min showers

IKR? I tried and failed to whittle my shower time down to 15 minutes a day, and have always felt sad about my spendthrift water use, so I can't imagine showering for an hour and a half. Especially with the drought we're bound to have again this summer. I'll probably end up alternating with bucket baths--you really can get pretty clean in under 12 gallons of water.

Central Texas is in a drought and we're supposed to be on water restrictions but it's not to the point where nobody is allowed to take daily showers (I don't know if that's ever on any of the water restriction levels -- but it should be)

Re: my housemate takes ridiculously long showers every day

My hair is only shoulder-length and it takes me about 30 minutes to shampoo and condition it. Add in any scrubbing, shaving, etc. and my showers end up taking about 45 minutes.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can take showers for that long. What makes a shower that long? Do people just stand around under the water? What do you do in there? My hair is relatively long and thick, and my showers are usually around 20 minutes maximum.

Yup, I stand around under the spray just kind of reveling in the pressurized hot water massaging my arms and back and shoulders. But I can't fathom doing it for a whole hour.

Re: my housemate takes ridiculously long showers every day

(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
i stand around, yeah. it's kind of therapeutic for me. granted my showers aren't ever an hour and a half long - maybe like 45-50 minutes tops. but that's still pretty long compared to how most people shower. i'm just not like that.

I don't get it either. As I pointed out earlier in this thread it's really bad for her hair to wash it daily and it takes like 5 (maybe 10 if you're realllly slow) minutes max to later your body with soap and rinse it off

Tell her about the hair.

The rest, I guess as long as she pays for the water, it's up to her.

Btw, I'm laughing reading the other comments wondering WHAT she could be doing in there, and I'm like "guys, think again ;)"
(And I'm one that can't EVER cum in the shower, which sucks, but that's beside the point)

"Your roommate is masturbating," was literally my first thought upon reading the SL.

I can't come from a showerhead either. But a tap with decent water pressure? Hell yeah.
