Shaving (Women): Help?
(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 02:23 am (UTC)(link)What kind of razor do you prefer (brand names would be helpful)? Do you get a pack of disposable ones, or the kind where you switch out the blades? How often do you switch out the blade (how do you know when it's dull)? Does putting on deodorant after you've shaved cause irritation? How do you avoid razor burn?
I have this (probably irrational) feeling that I'm doing it wrong (also I have to go and buy new razors tomorrow), and I'm looking for others' input.
Re: Shaving (Women): Help?
And I prevent razor burn by wetting the area with water first and then applying shaving cream. (Then, you know, shaving.)
Good luck.

Wash first (maybe exfoliate) to remove any dead skin so you get a neater, cleaner shave.
Trim your underarm hair with a small pair of scissors before you start shaving.
Don't shave with cold water. Seriously don't. It also helps if you sit in the warm water and let your pores open up for a few minutes before shaving. I like to put hair conditioner down for a minute or so before I shave my underarms and then put the shaving cream over that. I've never noticed a difference between fancy shaving creams and the ones you can get for less than a buck.
IME shaving with the grain (at least at first) results in fewer ingrown hairs. And instead of going for long strokes do smaller, slower ones.
Don't put on deodorant if you've nicked the skin or it feels irritated. Otherwise you should be good.

Re: Shaving (Women): Help?
(Anonymous) 2013-03-25 04:49 am (UTC)(link)When shaving under my arms I always go with the grain, not against. It's not as clean a shave that way, but my under-arms are too sensitive to go against the grain and whenever I used to I would get killer razor burn.
My hair is pretty coarse, so after about two weeks I have to throw my razor out and use another. That really depends on the time of year, though. If it's winter my razors last longer because I don't shave my legs as often since they're going to be covered by pants. During the summer I shave more often because I'm wearing skirts, capris and occasionally bathing suits. I just go by number of shaves. After I've shaved my legs four times with a razor, it's time for a new one. If your hair is less coarse, your razor will probably last longer.
I can tell when a razor is going dull because it's harder to shave with it. I have to press harder, and less hair comes away from a single stroke. I can also feel it tugging a bit. When that happens, it's definitely time for a new razor.
When it comes to deodorant causing irritation, it depends on the deodorant. If it's scented, it'll occasionally feel uncomfortable, especially if I've used a dull razor or nicked myself. Not so much for the unscented deodorants.
There are a few things that will definitely prevent razor burn:
1. Never use a dull razor. That causes razor burn, and it also causes ingrown hairs.
2. Don't try to shave dry. Get the part of your body you're shaving nice and damp, with warm and not cold water.
2. Use shaving cream. Sometimes a soap with a really good lather works too, but not as well and when I do that because I've run out of shaving cream, I do occasionally get razor burn.
Re: Shaving (Women): Help?
Not sure what to tell you about legs; I do them only rarely, and they tend to get itchy afterward.
Re: Shaving (Women): Help?
I don't use shaving cream though, nor soap I just shave in the shower. I do shave under my arms dry, if I notice hairs there and I am going out.
I've never had a razor burn, or any problems with ingrown hairs or anything. I do have a scar on one of my legs from using a men's razor without realizing it though. Nor do I have trouble with my deodorant. but I use a brand that is without perfume and stuff.
I do at times use hair removing cream instead though, because it is a lot less work.
