The problem is that they are better than CW average, sure, but not that special when compared to other networks. I've felt that Jared has been getting worse as the show goes on, and it's like he's relying on only a few facial expressions and nostril flaring. And it's not like the writing calls for anything else.

I can't really see either of them having much of an acting career after the show ends, so for them both it might be for the best if the show has a tenth season.

I agree with you about Jared getting worse over time. But I have to disagree about the no careers after SPN's run thing. Both of them were in shows before SPN so I don't see why they couldn't continue to be in them.

Yeah, but they are getting older by Hollywood standards. I mean, it's not like all of CW's former male stars were that successful after their most popular show was over. Like Tom Welling, Jason Behr, Nicholas Brendon et al. Have they done anything noteworthy lately?

Nope.

eh, I guess that's a good point. Maybe more horror movies then. Jensen was good in Ten Inch Hero, so maybe more indie movies for him.

Male actors getting older doesn't actually mean that much. Worst case scenario, they'll be typecast, but I'm sure they'll be in other shows.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Also they weren't known before Supernatural. They run the risk of being typecast now.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
You're right, neither one of them was ever a regular on a long-running TV series... oh wait.

You know that they are far more recognized by a wider Hollywood/TV-viewing audience for this show than any of the other roles they've had. A season or shorter for Jensen on other genre shows, or even less than half of all Gilmore Girls eps for Jared just does not even compare to leads on a cult show just shy of a decade old. A casting director might overlook Days or My Bloody Valentine or something, but no way in hell will they forget this show when considering if Jensen is appropriate for another role, for example.

Nayrt. He'd better hope that they'll overlook My Bloody Valentine. But I agree with this. Being a supporting character for some time isn't the same as being the lead actor, especially if this is their latest and most important role.

Uh maybe not to you but yes they were.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the reason Jared is relying on only a few facial expressions and nostril flaring is BECAUSE the writing calls for anything else? He might be phoning it in a bit, but that doesn't make him a bad actor.

And of course it would be best for them if the show has a tenth season - Hollywood being what it is, a guaranteed paycheck is a guaranteed paycheck. But that doesn't mean neither of them has an acting career. At the very least they've proven they can perform competently in action/thriller type stuff and in horror.

I feel like Jared was getting better by the end of the 5th season (like, I really thought he was good in Swan Song - you knew by looking at him when he was supposed to be Lucifer and when he was supposed to be Sam) but has not improved since. I don't know if it's that he's reached a plateau or that he has not had the right material or direction. And, Jensen seems to have gotten a little lazy lately. Almost like he's been Dean so long that he doesn't have to try anymore.

I had no idea I had so many feelings about this.

"Almost like he's been Dean so long that he doesn't have to try anymore."

This. This so much. I was watching S1&2 the other day and the acting done by Jensen is so different from S8. I think over time a lot of Jensen has bled into Dean's character too (almost to the point where it doesn't even feel like Jensen is trying when he's Dean).

On a different note from that, I think their peak in acting was S3. Both of them I think were seriously on their game during that season.
