I think Jensen is pretty decent, but I don't expect much from Supernatural.

It doesn't really bother me when people give praise to actors on CW type shows though, I'm more bothered by actors who are truly overrated and overpaid and somehow get major movies and win major awards when THEY are about on CW-level acting talent.

Like I do not want to see CW-level acting in an Oscar nominated film. Hire someone better.

Eh. I don't agree. I think they're decent actors underserved by the material. But I think that can be a hard distinguishing line to identify and in any case I'm not really that committed on this one.

The problem is that they are better than CW average, sure, but not that special when compared to other networks. I've felt that Jared has been getting worse as the show goes on, and it's like he's relying on only a few facial expressions and nostril flaring. And it's not like the writing calls for anything else.

I can't really see either of them having much of an acting career after the show ends, so for them both it might be for the best if the show has a tenth season.

Really, though? I kind of think that Jared is maybe a little overrated, but I honestly think that Jensen's amazing. I think he plays broken very well (his emotional scenes are where he really shines, imo) and I think he has excellent comedic timing.

I don't follow SPN -- I tried a few early episodes, and the show wasn't for me -- so I can't speak to Ackles' work on it.

But I had a chance to see an audition tape he did before SPN for something else, and some raws from an episode for another show. And yeah, the guy can act. Not all the actors you see on tv can (good editing can do an amazing job of covering up for the ones who can't), but Ackles is really, really good. His fans may be obnoxious about it, but that shouldn't be a reflection on him.

They're pretty decent, all things considered. Now, while they do have their truly spectacular moments (JARED IN 2.17,"HEART", OMFG), they're pretty mediocre for the most part.

I'm fine with mediocre acting BTW. At least they don't outright suck. It helps that 1) they play their characters well, and 2) they're both really easy on the eyes.

as I said above I think Ackles has buckets of charisma and treats acting quite seriously as a profession (I don't know how much range he has or if he's just stuck playing pretty because he's so. damn. pretty. but that's another thing)

But seriously, why do people think things like Oscars and Emmys really mean fuck all. It's two things I find incredibly annoying combined: the Hollywood circle jerk of awards season and fans with serious delusions of grandeur about their favourite show. It can be cheesy shit and still be amazing, just enjoy!

I'm enjoying the show so far, but I laugh every time Padalecki yells "Dean!" I didn't like Meg's first actress much either, though, so I might just be doing the fandom wrong.

Jensen plays Dean well and that's what he's paid for (I mean could you see anyone else as Dean?). Jared as well. What more could you ask for on a CW show?

Let's not blame the material, OP. Jared's just a bad actor and he continues to get worse over the years. Jensen's better at performing what's needed for the role, but I don't see him having a hugely successful career after the show either.

I think that Jared started out as below average, but has grown over the years. I think the Lucifer scenes (where he was Sam & Lucifer, talking to himself in the mirror, & when he was 100% Lucifer in The End) is proof of that.

I think Jensen started out good & is better all the time. His face & actions tell the story, just as much as the dialogue.

But I also think this is all arbitrary & depends entirely on the point of view of each individual person.

I agree OP. I think that the fandom has blinded people to the fact that they really can't act well.

I've watched a few episodes of the show and had to stop because I just couldn't take them seriously. You can tell when someone's legitimately trying to act and make it natural looking, and when someone's tryharding. The acting is pretty terrible.

Jensen is a horrible actor. He seems like such a charming dude, but not so much on the acting.

His face looks like he's permanently posing for a headshot no matter which expression he's trying.

Jared's not great, but I'm sometimes taken out of the story because of Jensen.

You know, I see Jared fans claim that he's never really had the 'material' to shine as an actor from time to time, and I always just boggle. Sam has had more shit happen to him and gone through more versions than like any other fictional character, ever.

SPOILERS for all seasons:

S1: Dead girlfriend, missing father, might be the antichrist, has freaky powers, is destined for EVIL, stalked by a demon, oppressive, obsessive older brother who doesn't want him to leave him ever, knew about his GF's death before it happened, daddy issues

S2: Dad dead and in Hell, demon stalking him, suicidal brother, other kids with freaky powers, first sex since his gf died and then he KILLS her, missing friends, possessed and kills people, hunted by the FBI, ultimate showdown of the freaky kids, finds out his mom knew the stalker demon, DIES, brother sells soul to bring him back, kills a dude of his own free will, death of demon who kiled his parents, Dad's soul poofs away to who knows where

S3: Brother sold his soul for him and has a year to live, new stalker demon who is hot, Dean is torn to pieces by hellhounds in front of him and goes to hell, his special powers make a comeback

s4: Fucking a demon and addicted to drinking her blood, dead brother comes back, angels are real and hate him but love his brother, finds out his mom was a hunter and basically sold him to the demon before he was born, can control demons with his mind or whatever, on a strange revenge quest, Dean doesn't trust him, Finds out there is a book series that chronicles his life and that they write incest porn about him on the internet, gets all I AM SMARTER AND STRONGER THAN HEAVEN, finds out he has a half-brother and then finds out the brother has been dead for week and the dude he's been bonding with is actually the monster that killed him, Dean rejects him, beats the shit out of Dean and chokes him out, kills an innocent woman, kills demon he's been hunting for a year, releases Lucifer from his cage, helps kill the demon he was banging cause she was evil (SHOCK) all along.

S5: Withdrawals from demon blood, set Lucifer free to roam the earth, Father-figure gets paralyzed, his brother is Michael's vessel, finds out he's Lucifer's vessel when Lucifer starts seducing him in his dreams, two close friends die to give him a chance to kill Lucifer and it fails, meets his parents when they were young, is murdered and goes to heaven, his brother is suicidal (again), decides to drink assloads of demon blood once more and take on Lucifer all by himself, isn't strong enough, nearly beats Dean to death as Lucifer, sees a shiny thing on the car and somehow becomes strong enough to overpower Lucifer (IDK), jumps into Lucifer's cage and drags his half-brother with him.

S6: Out of Lucifer's cage under mysterious circumstances with NO SOUL, kills people and fucks anything that moves and works with his creepy resurrected Grandpa and family, works for Crowley, gets his soul forced back in him by Death, finds out his friend has been working with the bad guy all season and was the one to bring him back without a soul, is attacked by friend and forced to remember all his Lucifer cage torture but still manages to walk 500 miles in less than 10 minutes to stab the friend when he goes all bunny boiler I AM GOD crazy

S7: His friend dies and releases Leviathan into the world, Hallucinates Lucifer and all kinds of nasty shit for most of the season, Dean kills his childhood monster friend, Bobby dies, Kills Dean's amazon daughter, Bobby comes back as a ghost, really starts losing his mind and eventually has to be hospitalized and is dying, friend comes back form the dead and takes his crazy into his own mind, saving his life, has to deal with Bobby's ghost going 'evil', eventually has to put Bobby down, goes after Leviathan and Dean and Cas vanish in front of him, teenage prophet kidnapped in front of him, ALL ALONE

S8: Has a girlfriend and a dog, Dean comes back, girlfriend's dead husband comes back, stuck with dean who is angry Sam didn't look for him, feels guilty for abandoning the Prophet, Sam gets extremely jealous over Dean's new BFF, Dean gets possessed and says all the nasty shit he ever thought about Sam, Cas returns from purgatory, has to decide between hunting and his married girlfriend, meets his grandfather and then watches him die, finds out he's a member of an ancient secret society and inherits their lair, BLAH BLAH BLAH


Okay, so I took 5 minutes and typed up the shit I remembered off the top of my head that Sam has gone through. That's a LOT of acting nonsense, a lot of opportunity to emote his ass off, and this is only the big stuff, I didn't even begin to touch all the little, one off episode things he goes through. If Jared had all this skill like people claim, it would have surfaced at some point in the last 8 years. He's had PLENTY of chances to prove himself.

(TBH, I just think he's bad at being Sam. When he's playing someone else -like when he was possessed and playing Meg- he's excellent. He's also very good at comedy, especially the physical stuff, but the writers definitely don't give him enough of that. I also think that some of the blame can be laid on the writers for some things. How the fuck is he supposed to play soulless in S6 when he doesn't know his character doesn't have a soul? How is supposed to play Sam-gone-wrong in S4 if he doesn't actually know what Sam has been doing? How is he supposed to make Sam sympathetic for not looking for his brother when the writers never bother to explain why he didn't look? But none of that negates that he really doesn't do that good of a job in general.)
