You know, I've gotten the feeling over the past few years (since about S5/6) that Jared doesn't particularly like Sam anymore. Not that I blame him, Sam is tedious at best, but I think that has a lot to do with why his acting feels forced, when he even bothers. Plus, it's got to be disheartening, that everyone is all gaga over Jensen and Misha's skillz, but mostly he just gets mocked for his flared nostrils.

As for Jensen, I think he's a wonderful actor who has been playing the same scenes over and over for 8 years now. Back in S2, when he wasn't used to crying and emoting and being all emo, the scene where he mourned Sam was incredible. But 6 years later, he can do it in his sleep, and I think it shows. They just used it too much, it doesn't feel genuine anymore. I mean, take early S8, when he was in purgatory, acting with Benny. It was new, a new way to play Dean and a new character to act with in a new setting, you could tell he was loving it, there was a fire there. But now, it's back to the same old bullshit and he's kinda just coasting along.

I also think the directors have something to do with it. I've noticed that whenever I have a 'WTF is this ott bullshit acting' moment, it's almost always a Singer episode. I don't think that dude understands subtlety, and I think he pushes the actors to ridiculous places.

Don't forget the fivehead. Jared plays it off like no big, but it has to bug him. OTOH, I adore the con videos, when there are good ones I can actually understand whoever is speaking, because Jared seriously comes alive talking to fans and to Jensen in an unscripted situation. I'd love to see him on an improv show.

And I agree with you on Jensen. Dean doesn't really have the range needed to keep Jensen interested. I'm not sure that's the right word, because I think Jensen is, as others have said, a professional who, when it comes down to it, loves his work. But Dean is hard-wired to protect Sam, and that doesn't allow for a wide range of reactions or actions. It probably helps Jensen stay interested that he's been able to direct and can look at things from that perspective too. I loved Jensen in Dark Angel, and even in Bloody Valentine (although I didn't love the movie). He can actually act but Dean doesn't really give him the vehicle anymore.

My favorite seasons are 1 and 2, for a few reasons, but it was all still fresh for everyone involved.
