The doctors who work on you when you're dying aren't part of the transplantation team. The two are separate.

And you really think the doctor who works on your case isn't constantly aware that there's a whole lot of people in need of organs, who would benefit if they didn't try too hard to save your one life? Especially if you belong to a group the doctor looks down on?

That isn't a thing that happens. Yeah, maybe a few isolated mentally ill angel-of-mercy doctors do that a year all over the world, but it's not a thing. Doctors don't tend to think that way, and even for the ones that do, there are safeguards in the system designed to incentivize them to do everything they can to save their own patients. Not to mention multiple levels of doctors and nurses and overseers and insurers and fuckloads of paperwork checking and balancing each other to prevent abuse. You honestly believe doctors have that much unchecked and unlimited power over their own patients? LOL.

Do you honestly think doctors are some kind of angelic beings who impartially value the life of every patient who comes through their practice and think every life is equally worthy of being saved?

No, of course not. It's very cute how you ignored the entire rest of my comment, which explains what safeguards there are to stop the doctors who do think that way.

It's also very cute how you think patients should just trust a huge, powerful, bureaucratic institution because it makes use of a lot of paperwork.

I think patients should trust it because it's transparent enough for the free press to nose around in and credibly report that it's not a horrible bastion of abuse, it has pretty functional (not failsafe, but functional) safeguards, and most importantly, we don't have any better options at the moment.

It's impossible to hide yourself away and never rely on other people because they *might* betray your trust. It's utterly degrading to the human spirit to look upon everyone with any leverage over you as someone who potentially wants to kill and exploit you. Yes, some of them might want to kill you. Yes, some of them might betray you, but throwing a tantrum and refusing to participate in society because other people might be evil doesn't do jack shit to help you. The world just doesn't work like that, sweetheart.

If you're really so paranoid about the current system, do something to improve it. Disengaging from it won't help you except by the wildest of coincidences.

Well, it might kind of help you not be betrayed or killed. Most violent crimes are committed by people the victim trusts, so. It's paranoia, sure, but it's not baseless paranoia.

You can use people for all those things without actually trusting them, calculating the benefits of contact against the risks. It requires one to see all people as dangerous by default, but considering how many folks grow up in abusive homes, ignored by authority figures, sometimes that perspective makes more sense than expecting help to come from any direction.

But the OP is mocking people and implying they're stupid for going to the hospital to get treated because she thinks the doctor might try to make them die in order to harvest their organs. Come on.

Sorry, but you DO have to trust some people for some necessary things. Not everything, but you have to trust that your doctor probably won't try to kill you, that your waiter probably won't steal your credit card info, that your taxi driver probably won't rape you. This doesn't require trusting them personally because you deem them trustworthy, it requires trusting that there are safeguards that usually work built into the system that makes the likelihood of them abusing you fairly unlikely, because living in other ways is a horrifying non-life.

OP is giving reasons why one might not want to put oneself on the donor list, they didn't say anything about just not going to the hospital. Hence, using doctors while being suspicious of them, when you have a choice in the matter.

Avoiding hospitals except when unavoidable, not using credit cards, or refusing to ride in taxis don't strike me as a "horrifying non-life". I live that life, not because of trust issues, but because of being-broke issues, lol. Not saying there aren't better reasons to trust, but those are particularly poor examples.

Also, safeguards that usually work? Seriously? What safeguards keep your waiter from spitting in your food? A doctor from giving you the wrong diagnosis? A driver from being a nut? These are risks that most of us accept, but they are risks, and you don't exactly have to dig deep to find millions of stories where that trust was badly betrayed. Like I said, it's not an unfounded paranoia, paranoia though it is.

Not killing someone in those circumstances is not saintly, it's basic human decency. In fact, it's not even that - it's such a low expectation that even most non-decent people would live up to it. Because most people don't want to get someone killed if they can help it.

Doctors are people, and most people wouldn't actually murder someone given half a chance.

Besides, there is such a thing as professionalism. Again, doctors are people, and most people are capable of putting their personal feelings aside when their job demands they do so. And you'd better believe doctors need to.

I think most large institutions value their own wealth, prestige, and influence over the good of the people they ostensibly serve, and "professionalism" frequently means that doctors would believe and protect colleagues before patients.

Also, I think that people who have no shame about charging $1.50 for a single dose of regular-strength Tylenol don't worry too much about preventing abuse.

Actually, the people who overcharge for Tylenol are, ironically, the ones MOST likely to be overzealous about preventing abuse. People who overcharge on Tylenol are obsessed with their profit margin, and malpractice lawsuits and bad publicity are a MASSIVE drain on money and profits.

Look, it's precisely because I don't think doctors are flawless angels that I don't believe this.

The probably care about the greater good. But doctors, surgeons in hospitals, with the sort of position that would put them in charge of your life? They aren't going to risk their job, their licensing, and even time in prison just to save a few people. Don't be stupid.
