Mei's actually a goat, not a sheep. That said, I'm not sure what to say... It's cool that you no longer feel that "slash shipping" is a waste of time or the subtext "just made up", I guess?

Well...yeah, that is it, basically. Pretty good summary.

And just think, 90%* of the world thinks exactly how you used to.

(*random number but it's probably a massive majority)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
wasn't mei always male though?
though to be fair, the subtext was pretty damn strong. i think most people saw is as romantic either way.

slash and het fans like to differentiate between themselves, but there's really very little difference if you think about it. Not only is there a significant overlap, both types are moved and motivated by the same feelings, right? when it comes down to it, we're all shippers.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, it's kinda weird to me that it took you so long to figure it out.

People ship stuff they like.

Also, just because you assumed all characters were hetero, doesn't mean that everybody does.

Yeah, this.

Was the problem that you were confused by non-canon ships, OP? Like, "The creators would assume the characters were hetero, so the subtext people are seeing can't be real"?

Because that's still assuming that the creators were assuming characters were heterosexual, but it makes a little more sense than assuming everyone was, I guess.

I assume everyone is bisexual until proven otherwise... This goes double for fictional characters.

You'd be right in my case.

I like this assumption.

Could someone tell me the name of the show(?) on the right? I think I remember reading about it and wanting to watch it, but now I've forgotten what it was called...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
They're both the same show. Its name is "Arashi no Yoru ni" (One Stormy Night).

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not familiar with the movie, but...

I almost always rationalize my slash ships with, "If one of them was a girl, nobody would question it." I recognize when my ships are off-the-wall and cracky, but I also have ships that could be or would almost invariably be taken to be canon if they were a guy and a girl rather than two guys. I know a lot of other slash fans do this, too.

Personally, I'm just waiting for a show where there's a male and a female protagonist and they don't hook up. Tired of all this "men and women CAN'T be 'just friends'!" bullshit :/

Warehouse 13 and Elementary, to name two.

Which one are you referring to? In Elementary's case, the showrunners have said repeatedly they won't go the romantic route with them, and that showing a platonic relationship between Joan and Sherlock is an important element of the show. And Warehouse is in its fourth season and both Joanne Kelly and Eddie McClinttock have vetoed the idea of a Pete/Myka romance. (Besides which, Myka has HG anyway.)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
da
no, seriously. Just wait. No matter how... no wait, THE MORE vehemently something is denied, the likelier it is to happen. Also, I have no idea about the Warehouse show, but X Files went how many years, stringing along the ust between Mulder and Scully?

That's what they said about X-Files. We know how that went.

GAH!

Personally, this may seem irrational and immature but I want Joan and Sherlock to be romantically involved (or at least acknowledged that they are heavily attracted to each other)... so that it could justify my reluctant drive to seek out homo subtext in John/Sherlock (BBC).

30 Rock

And it's over now and they're both married to other people/raising families--that was one of the great things I loved about the show. Liz and Jack's dynamic was hilarious and fun to watch, Jack was a great mentor and Liz's quirkiness rubbed off on him. The fact that they never got together was the best thing the show could've done.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
Not technically protagonists in these cases, nor currently airing, but major characters:

Allison and Scanlon on Medium
Danny and Jackie on Blue Bloods

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean they don't hook up with each other or they don't hook up with anyone? It doesn't really count if they're already in relationships. Either way, SVU is one example.
