Is...this history fandom different than...historians? Are they only casual historians or something?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it just means people who write RPF about historical figures.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-26 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean historical fiction.

There are slash fics of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, if that answers your question. I don't believe they're representative (at least I don't think so) but they're certainly not historians. History lovers, yes.

This person makes disturbingly hot Thomas/Martha Jefferson fanart but I'd thought it was just a 1776 thing.

He got in a lot of trouble for plagiarism because one of his sources wasn't cited or something, but it turned out to be a graduate assistant's fault (he just gets other people to do his research for him like a lot of public historians) -- either that or they just took the fall

Sort of off topic but I just think about that anytime anyone mentions Ambrose

Also I saw David McCullough speak at my university once and he was boring and shit and said the most obvious things like "people in the past... didn't know they were living in the past". I was just like, NO SHIT SHERLOCK I CAN'T BELIEVE MY UNIVERSITY PAID YOU THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO STAND UP THERE AND SAY THIS OBVIOUS SHIT

Ambrose is pretty damn famous for that. He was our poster character for "Don't fucking plagiarize" in historiography. I'm in training to be a historian so that's kind of a thing.

"Graduate assistant's fault?" likely story.
