I gave the book away so I don't have the exact quotes, but the guy says he believes in Heaven or something and the protagonist considers the fact that she automatically assumes anybody who believes in a higher power is an idiot.

Like, wow. I actually had to take an hour to process exactly how stupid that was. And she repeats it a couple more times iirc. After I finished it, I dropped it off at a friend's place and told her to keep it. I get annoyed just seeing that book sometimes.

wow, you certainly are delicate

I do try.

(I get enough flack for my religion as it is, so I was just kind of mad that the idol of teenage girls everywhere was advocating that crap.)

But... Did you read the rest of the book?

As a Catholic I get where you're coming from. I can prove my intelligence again and again, but since I believe in God I must be inherently less intelligent. Didn't stop me from reading the book, but I get it.

Well, I get offended if a protagonist says not believing in a higher power makes you immoral or whatever and it's never challenged, so I can't throw stones.

John Green's a Christian, jsyk. It's the character's belief, not the writer giving the character his own belief, in case that's what offended you.

I guessed that they weren't exactly his beliefs, but they were never disproved in the book either. People still take it at face value.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
So... You were offended by a fictional character's beliefs?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
lol, mte.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
are you one of those people who thinks Nabokov is a pedo?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, what the fuck. Do you think that every single thing a character says is the author's personal opinion?

Every single book ever must offend you in some way, if that's the case.

Hm, that's a stupid opinion, but if it was the character's opinion, I wouldn't call it offensive, though it may make me dislike the character. Characters can be wrong, it's not necessarily the author talking.

(And, if it was Hazel talking, I may be callous and say it was probably deliberate on John Green's part. He is usually very careful about not offending anyone, but Hazel is practically a Mary Sue. He may be trying to give her some faults.)

That bothered me too, although I'm not religious. Hazel also made a couple weird gender comments that bugged me, that certain things were "boy things" so she didn't like them. I get that's not John Green's personal opinion, but it didn't make the character likable to me.
