What are some characters that took you a while to warm up to, but who you started liking later on? Did you start liking them because the character changed, or because you changed your mind about them?

Jayne from Firefly. I hated him at first, but by the second run through he was one of my favorites. Idk, I just started to find him funny instead of annoying/offensive.

Garth on Supernatural.

Jaime in ASoIaF. Actually, ASoIaF is really good at that in general. It tears down your favourites and makes you feel sympathy for the people you hate.

Oh yes. Him, Sansa, and Cersei. And strangely, Margarey. I'm not sure why I didn't like her until later, but now I do.

Yep. I was going to say Cersei for similar reasons, but it can apply to a lot of characters in ASOIAF.

Jaime, yes. I've really warmed up to him. I'm a show watcher only, so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with him.

I hate every single new companion and new Doctor on Doctor Who on principle until they've proved me wrong, so this has happened....about fifteen times with just that one show :D

Also, Cordelia from Buffy. I despised her for ages until I suddenly realized how awesome she was if I just tilted my head a little and looked at her from a slightly different angle.

My initial reaction to Martha: You're not Rose. >:(
My later reaction to Martha: Omg I love you please don't leave the show.

I was just talking about him on f!s yesterday (for spoilery reasons I won't say why), but Lane Pryce on Mad Men. At first he's the stuffy agent of the British company that bought Stirling Cooper, and the writing/direction very much codes him as an outsider/interloper into the SC dynamic. Then you warm up to him a lot, especially when his PPL bosses attempt to send him to their branch in India. And by the time you get to "Congratulations, gentlemen, you're all fired!" Lane was one of my favorite characters. I love his friendship with Joan. I love that he's a fan of the early expansion Mets- it says SO much about him. And he's got a mean left hook:

The only one I can think of right now is Merle from Walking Dead, I know hes racist and a murderer etc etc, but I liked how the writers made him a little more complex this season, and in the last episode he was downright badass.

I think his actor did a good job, I could have bought a redemption arc if they had kept him around.

Thomas on Downton Abbey. I think it's a mixture of both reasons. He totally killed me in the latter half of s3, and at the moment it's hard for me to see him going back to the exact same kind of douchebaggery as before, so I'm a little hopeful that maybe he'll have one of those "huge asshole gets better because of reasons" character arcs that are my favorite.

River Tam. It took hitting Jayne in the face for me to like her.

Colette from Tales of Symphonia. She was... hard to like at first and I disliked some of the gendered tropes she embodied. However, after a few playthroughs I realized that she wasn't a bad character and, in fact, was rather interesting once you took a moment to really look at her.

Bleach: Orihime Inoue, when I reread after some time away I had a new perspective on her and her treatment by the author.

Naruto: Sakura, post-timeskip she became strong in her own right and more proactive - though I might be going the other way now because of how the author has been backtracking and sidelining her.

Rock Lee, first time around I found him very off-putting and I was reading for ninja powers then, but now I find his unique situation and optimistic personality very endearing.

Thor: Jane, she seemed disposable and sue-ish to me, but I've learned to better appreciate her.

I agree with all of the people you listed anon (well except for Rock Lee as I love him since his first appearance).

I hope Sakura doesn't backtrack completely just to fit the role of a doting girlfriend/healer/watcher. I hope she doesn't end up with Sasuke in the end. She's come so far that she needs to move past her love for Sasuke and find someone else. That would show her growth as a character even more.

I agree about Sakura - I wasn't keen on her before Shippuuden, then I was, and now... it's a mix of feelings. I'm not up-to-date with the series (getting through it at the moment), but I've found Sasuke acts a bit like a lens for me. The closer Naruto and Sakura are to him, the more I dislike the whole thing. Moving on from him would be growing up for them - unpleasant, leaving things that are loved behind, but moving forward with their lives.

Orihime from Bleach. At first I disliked her for silly reasons (read: I shipped IchiRuki) but after a while I grew very fond of her. I'm not into the series anymore, but I still think she's adorable and wish she (and Rukia) were in a better manga.

Amanda Rollins from SVU. I wasn't sold on her through most of her first season because they didn't give her much of a personality at first. They were so focused on setting up the Benson-Amaro partnership that they kind of seemed to forget about her. Once they fleshed her out a bit she became one of my favorites.

Changed my mind about Kyoko in PMMM after finding out her backstory.

Nanami in Revolutionary Girl Utena after her development in eps. 31-32.

Rachel on Glee. Not sure why; I'm guessing character development.

Aradia Megido. I thought she was boring at first, but the moment she got the tiger, I suddenly adored her, and also retroactively started liking her old personality too. Now she's my favorite character. <3

Also, Norma Beatty from Tales of Legendia. My first playthrough, I found her annoying, I think. But then when I replayed the game a few years later, I had no idea why I had ever disliked her. She's so much fun, and such a great character.

Sawyer from Lost. Completely hated him at first, and even though he was a pretty awful person he was one of my favorites by the end.

I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them right now.

Buffy's mom, Joyce. Couldn't stand her at first, then, when I actually liked her, they killed her off. :(

When I first played Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, I disliked Bentley immensely 'cause his voice annoyed the hell out of me. Due to the amount of character-development he went through, though, by the time the fourth game came out, however, Bentley had easily become my favorite character in the series. Then I played the fourth one and my new favorite is Tennessee Kid Cooper, but Bentley's a close second.
