This raises an interesting question. Do people who fandom about historical figures do it as RPF or as usual fandomy things based on the movies and historical fiction? Does it matter? Where do you draw the line? Now I'm actually interested in this.

Also, how would one write Caligula smutfic when Hollywood's already done it?

Uh I personally have no interest in RPF and most historical movies are horrendously inaccurate. I fangirl based on the facts of the person's life, their extant writing if any, what can be imagined about their character given the demands of the particular time and their setting within it. I research everything about them or related to their life or the era, in the same obsessive way I might get into a fandom. I'm not interested in fanfic in either case, historical or regular fandom.
