Religious question

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
so the other day i noticed that a lot of fashion in stores atm (at least where i am) is the "hippie/boho/ethnic" style, plus tons of "pastel goth" stuff.

a lot of the clothing tends to use religious icons - crosses, the hamsa, the yin/yang symbol, the buddhist wheel, pentacles, etc.

if there's any religious anons out there - what are your thoughts on this?

I don't really care? They're just symbols -- they only have meaning if people give them meaning. So they mean one thing to me, but if they mean something else to another person...eh, so what? It's not hurting me or interfering with what they mean to me. People can do whatever they want to do.

OTOH, I've heard some really unfortunate stuff regarding Hindus who now can't use the swastika for religious purposes because the Nazi connotations a) interfere with their ability to take the right meaning from the symbol and b) are so offensive to other people who don't know the symbol's history. However, goth clothing is not even remotely comparable to Nazi propaganda. There's no manifestations of oppressive power involved.

I know the history of the swastika just fine, but if I see some goth girl wearing one, I'm going to peg her for a Nazi fetishist, sorry.

da

Why do you feel the need to 'peg' her though? Is there something wrong with reserving judgement until/unless you get the opportunity to ask her about it?

Do you have some urgent need to make uninformed snap judgements about people walking down the street that you don't have any extended association with? Does it serve a purpose? Is it of use to you? Does it help you stay safe or act in a way that benefits you that you wouldn't be able to do without 'pegging' her?

I'm not being rhetorical: I'd like to know what tangible benefit you get out of 'pegging' someone as something that's distasteful but not a threat to your safety or harmful/inconvenient to you based on highly limited facts? Unless you need to interact with her extensively enough to need to know and care whether she's a Nazi fetishist, in which case you will get the opportunity to ask her why she's wearing it, what use does you 'pegging' her serve?

Aaaand now all I can think about is strap-on dildos, but still, my question still stands.

Why do you care so much--unless you're a Nazi fetishist?

As for what benefit I get--I get to mock someone who probably thinks she's a badass and looks ridiculous.

Huh, I haven't noticed these things being particularly popular on clothing nowadays.

If someone outside my religion wore clothing with common symbols of my religion I'd think it was really cool that other people were appreciating the meaning behind it. It might be a bit different if people outside my religion were walking around in clothes with sacred ceremonial value, though. I wouldn't be deeply upset by it, but I would find it kind of disrespectful.

You think the people OP describes are wearing these clothes because the appreciate the meaning behind the religious symbols? Because I seriously doubt it.

I don't know? I'm not familiar with most of the symbols OP mentioned or their corresponding religions, so I was just talking about my own religious symbols, which in the few times I hear about people outside my religion wearing them, it's because they like the meaning behind it and want to apply it to their own lives. I didn't think it would be fair to offer my opinion on, like, people wearing yin-yang necklaces, since I'm not Buddhist.

And I thought most people who wear crosses are actually Christian...
