Re: What Does Your (IRL) First Name Mean?

Actually the Alexis family of names isn't derived from Alexander - they're two different names families, and Alexis (and its variants) have been their own names for just as long as Alexander and its variants. Alexis and its relatives just mean "defender," Alexander and its relatives mean "defender of men" or "defender of mankind"(from the same Greek word that Alexis comes from, plus the Greek word for man).

So, Zandra is a short form of a name that means "defender of men."

The Alexis family of names and the Alexander family of names all trace back to the same Greek meaning of "defender of man". It's common to drop the "of man" with female names. Since Alexis is considered its own name instead of a shortened variant, it is usually defined as "defender" and names derived directly from Alexandra are still sometimes defined as "defender of man".

Alexis didn't originate as a female version of Alexander, though. I meant that the entire family of Alexis-names are their own family, separate from the Alexander family, with the Alexis family meaning "defender" (whether it's the name is male or female) and the Alexander family meaning "defender of man."

Zandra is a shortened version of a name from the Alexander family (Alexandra), but it has more of the "-andr" part than the "Alex" part. So it doesn't come from the Alexis family.

FWIW, Alexis can be male or female. Alexius/Alexios, Alessio, and Alexei are male. Alexia and Alessia are female. So this family includes both male and female names.
