You must not know a lot of teenagers who think they're super smart when they don't exactly understand what it is they're parroting. I was one, and so were my friends.

The kids in his books aren't portrayed as if they think they're super smart but don't understand what they're talking about, though. If they were, it wouldn't be so annoying because it would be realistic, but instead it's written totally straight.

Tbf, there ARE a handful of teenagers who ARE super smart and understand much of what they were talking about. I had a small group of friends in high school who would talk to the teachers on roughly the same level. They viewed us more as peers than just students, so a lot of the book felt natural. Isaac felt a lot more average-kid than Hazel or Augustus, but I didn't really identify as him. Because of my personal history, their characters rang really true.
