Origin of OTP

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen sooooo many definitions of this term (many that contradict each other), ranging from "any pairing I really, really like" to "the only pairing I like". At this point I think it's safe to say that "OTP" has become about as meaningless as "Mary Sue" (in the sense that it means whatever you personally want it to mean). What I want to know is what the term originally meant, or if it ever even had a single definitive meaning. Does anyone here know?

It stands for One True Pairing, so I'm assuming it means (or at one point meant) your absolute favorite pairing.

I always thought of "one true pairing" basically being like someone's "one true love," in couple form. Like saying the two characters in question are destined by the stars to love each other forever and ever.

Fanlore discusses it a bit.

Way back when, OTP meant to me, that you have one favourite pairing in a fandom and can't see the people in that pairing be shipped with anyone else.

Pretty sure this was how it was generally used way back when I first got into fandom, too.

That's always how I saw it used and I still think of it that way.

This is how I use the term as well.

That's what it was to me back in the day, too. I still struggle to use the term "OTP" because I'm a multi-shipper and the very idea feels wrong to me.

I thought it always meant One True Pairing. tbh I think it's like one of those dead-horse jokes. It's lost it's meaning but people keep using it. At this stage you might as well substitute 'OTP' with the word 'ship' and most ways people use it now wouldn't change meaning.

From my end of the Net, OTP stands for One True Pairing. It is the most absolute favorite pairing you have in your mind, above all the other pairings.

IIRC the abbreviation came from X-Files fandom, which was home to one of the first great internet shipwars: Mulder/Scully vs. Mulder/Krycek. Not that the term "one true pairing" was never in use before, but I think that was where it became seriously popularized.

Isn't that also where 'shipper' comes from, or was at least popularised? There were relationshippers, who wanted Scully and Mulder to get together, and NoRoMos / no romance, who didn't.

Man, X-Files is a surprisingly important fandom.

Shipper definitely came from X-Files fandom. I'm not 100% about OTP, but I think it did too.
