IIRC the abbreviation came from X-Files fandom, which was home to one of the first great internet shipwars: Mulder/Scully vs. Mulder/Krycek. Not that the term "one true pairing" was never in use before, but I think that was where it became seriously popularized.

Isn't that also where 'shipper' comes from, or was at least popularised? There were relationshippers, who wanted Scully and Mulder to get together, and NoRoMos / no romance, who didn't.

Man, X-Files is a surprisingly important fandom.

Shipper definitely came from X-Files fandom. I'm not 100% about OTP, but I think it did too.
