Can't say I ever identified with him to that extent. That being said, he is the textbook definition of fans hating a character because he hits too close to home.

That is what makes all the super-Shinji Awesome-Guy fanfics so pathetic, you just know the reason the authors are trying to de-Aquaman him is because they see themselves in him and are trying to pretend they aren't pathetic too.

I'm somewhere in the middle -- he's not AMAZING AND AWESOME but he's not "Aquaman" either. There are a few times in the show (granted, not toward the end) where he actually does do very heroic things, but for the most part he never establishes any meaningful relationships with anyone and continues to avoid doing his "duty" of piloting the Eva (which he never chose to do in the first place)

I think mostly it's just really easy for me to understand Shinji and his motives even though I don't agree with everything the character does

This is probably what bugs me about most of the AU spinoff manga, including Campus Apocalypse, because he loses pretty much all relatability and ends up more of a wish-fulfillment character.
