I agree.

The first time I watched Evangelion, I wouldn't say I hated him but I found him irritating. Now I actually like his character and I can emphathize with him about the situation.

People always seem to hate characters who aren't badasses. Oh, your response to this situation is realistic? Well then, you suck! Go DIAF!

It's as if people channel all of their frustrations with themselves and with life into despising characters that encompass that frustration.

He never annoyed me that much. I understood exactly why he was whiny and aloof in the first place so I guess that's why? I bet a lot of people actually identify with him and that's why he's so hated in the first place

I find him so irritating precisely because I can relate to him so much. His character contains so many aspects of myself that I really dislike, so needless to say watching NGE had always been a little bit painful.

I never understood the "whiny emo" Shinji hate. His reaction isn't the most heroic, no, but it's completely understandable, especially given that he's 1) fifteen freaking years old and 2) forced to be there by a man he has good reason to hate.

I don't know... I've said this before on Shinji!hate threads but, honestly, you have no idea until you've been there, OP. There are plenty of autobiographical works by soldiers who never though they could do the things they did, or how it was the people one least expected to rise to the occasion/collapse under the pressure. It could be you'd be him, it could be you'd be Asuka. It could be that you'd never make it onto the field. It could also be that it wouldn't bother you in the slightest, and you'd lie to everyone and pretend that it did just so that they wouldn't look at you as inhuman.

I love Shinji.

People who hate on him or call him whiny or say he needs to be punched and become SUPER SHINJI don't understand the core of his character or his role. Evangelion is supposed to be a more realistic look at what happens when you make fucked up teens go through traumatic experiences to save the world. (or well, try to at least) They are gonna be traumatized and scared and depressed and fuck up and fuck up again and be self-centered and everything. That is why it is great. Yeah, Shinji is sometimes annoying, but if you even for a moment think you'd deal better with the shitty ass hand he has been dealt with in life you are deluding yourself.

I don't get the Shinji haters, I really don't. They probably need to evaluate their life and their choices or something.

He's an unstable 14 year old suffering with a lot of very valid issues. He has to pilot a huge EVA (which went berserk on him on the very first pilot, lol) with the fate of humanity resting on his shoulders. How the fuck would YOU feel?

I will never fucking understand why he gets all the shit that he does.

1. He's fourteen.

2. With immense issues that are very justified.

3. He goes through non-stop hell while piloting a bio-engineered golem possessed with the soul of his MOTHER.

4. All of the adults in his life utterly fail to help him in any way.

I fucking dare anyone to find a fourteen-year-old kid who can go through all that with perfect grace. I'd like to see an adult do it.

It gets even worse when people mention Rei and Asuka's badassedness as some sort of contrast. Except that if you paid any fucking attention, their badass natures stem directly from how fucked up they are. Asuka would literally rather die than accept failure because of crippling insecurity and Rei has absolutely no regard about her life at all. It's easy to be 'badass' when you have so little self-worth.
