I seriously doubt Naruto/Sakura will ever become canon. Kishimoto's writing involving romance has all been endless, unrequited love or entirely off-screen. And even if he did go for romance (maybe in an epilogue) he'll probably go with Naruto/Hinata.

He's been giving Hinata, and specifically her interacting with Naruto ("his hand is so big and manly"), a lot of pages lately, so it seems clear to me Kishimoto is maneuvering her into the big-breasted but innocent and ever-loyal female reward for Naruto. Her cousin Neji practically told Naruto to date/marry her in the last chapter he was in, and we've seen wondering/approving thoughts of Hinata's feelings for Naruto from Sakura so there's also set-up for everyone else around them being happy for them.

Though I think Hinata's been destined for this since the beginning, it is kind of sad that Kishimoto probably won't do much else with her. Her overcoming her lack of self-confidence was an interesting idea that I wish had been focused on and fleshed out in the story more.

Hinata's character development is interwined with Naruto. I think a lot of people miss that. Just because Naruto is a part of her development, doesn't mean she isn't getting self-development. She went from a girl who always ran away, to standing up for herself and fighting. Naruto was her inspiration, but HINATA was the one who stood and fought Neji. HINATA was the one who gave the proud failure speech, who fought Pain for him, who gave him the 615 speech. She's developed just fine, REGARDLESS of what anti-Hinata and NS shippers think.

Oh, I agree she's gotten a lot of development, I suppose I just think that she should have had more outside of that if Kishimoto was going to pair her with Naruto. We know she is inspired by and has a crush on Naruto, had really low self-confidence and surpassed it, but not much else about her. How does she relate to her teammates and teacher/team-leader? What are her specific combat skills and styles? We haven't seen her really use any techniques yet. I'd have liked to see her on a mission without/unobserved by Naruto the way we did everyone else in the rookie 9.

I've always been neutral toward her pairing-wise, but I prefer for both the characters to be more rounded and have more interaction together in canon if they're going to have a romance.

Not that I disagree with the fact she's had character development. I, too, would like fleshing out of her character in her own right, as I would like for a lot of the other Naruto's peers. The general lack of this is one of the reason why I abandoned the series, tbh.

I really wanted some development in romance for the rest of the Konoha 11. So far only Shikamaru and Lee have established love-interests :P

Yeah I get that. I would love to see more on Hinata. I know Kurenai is probably like another mother to her since Hiashi pawned her off on him, and she's likely close with Kiba and Shino, but I think Team 8 is very much neglected as a whole on Kishi's part. :/

The image of Orihime just flashed before my eyes. That is a perfect description for her, just replace Naruto with "Ichigo".

Hinata on the other hand, she's cool and I think she's more than some fanservice. Hopefully Kishimoto treats her better, but it's only my hope. I think Kishimoto is responding to Hinata's popularity and that's why she's gotten this amount of attention. I dislike NH for the same reasons you do, but I don't believe it's going to happen.

Can you explain the "approving thoughts of Hinata's feelings for Naruto from Sakura" to me? I remember Sakura healing a badly injured Hinata and looking tired/sad when Sakura thought about Hinata's confession.

Yes, unfortunately for Orihime that does fit her as well. I've heard ath Kubo has said Ichigo has better things to do than fall in love though, so I'm hoping that never becomes canon. Her deference to Ichigo all the time gives a power imbalance I don't think I'd ever be comfortable becoming a romance.

As to Sakura's thoughts: I guess that's mostly my own interpretation of the scenes, but each time it seemed that Sakura was approving/admiring Hinata's feelings and actions. I think there were more instances of this sort of approval from other people, but these are the ones I remembered:

In chapter 442 she thinks to herself that Hinata must really love Naruto after Neji asks why she threw herself between him and Pain.

In chapter 615, to me, she implies approval of Hinata taking a place by Naruto's side, sort-of stepping down for her because as his teammate that really should be Sakura's place, and letting her knock sense into and comforting him, which has previously been Sakura's role.

And in chapter 614 Neji basically says Hinata's, and a lot of other people's, happiness rests in Naruto. Usually when a particular person is singled out like that it's implied to be romantic.
