Bento anyone?
(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 01:27 am (UTC)(link)Re: Bento anyone?
1. Sandwiches are great, but don't put vegetables and such on top of it, keep them in a small box on the side. To avoid sogginess.
2. Cut up fruit, vegetables and/or berries and put them in an airtight box, do not put anything that isn't fruit/vegetables with it.
3. Yoghurt is also pretty nice as a side to your main lunch.
4. Whatever food you had for dinner last night can always be brought, as long as you have access to a microwave (or like me can eat dinner foods cold).
5. Cereal is possible to bring (even without a bowl), just put the cereal in a box and bring a carton of milk.
6. Don't put the same stuff in your lunch box every day, you will tire of it, make small changes.
7. Buy lunch boxes with more than one "compartment", they are awesome and makes life easier. So does tiny boxes, for cucumber or tomatoes or whatnot to put on your sandwiches.
8. Salads are awesome! And great as lunch foods, just make sure it is filling enough, chicken and/or cheese is great to put in the salad to make it more filling, but still relatively healthy.
9. Either make your lunch the night before and put it in the fridge, or make room in your morning schedule to make it then. Last minute lunches are no fun.
10. And the most important rule of all: If it can be put in a box you can bring it to lunch!
Did that answer your questions?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 01:51 am (UTC)(link)I'm better at looking at other people make bentos. LOL Best of luck, though! I envy people who can make such cute bentos.
These is a thread at a Korean fan forum where one member shows their creations. They also have tutorials at Youtube.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:21 am (UTC)(link)My tip is to NOT run out and buy an expensive bento box. Not everyone will agree because bento boxes are cute and it's fun to have one, but when you don't know if you'll want to do this regularly, dropping a bunch of money on it is silly. Try looking for a basic plastic lock-lid box. Lock & Lock is a popular brand, but these days there are cheaper generics everywhere-- Target, dollar stores, etc. Look for one with sturdy latches and a tight-fitting lid.
How big of a box to get is another question, but it really depends on how much you eat per meal. I have an 800 ml one with two removeable compartments that fits a sandwich and a small amount of other stuff: two peeled clementines and some tiny dill pickles, candy, etc. I also have a larger 1.1 liter box that easily fits a sandwich (cut in half and stacked on its sides), and a larger portion of something like cottage cheese, fruit, hummus and carrot sticks, edamame, etc. Both cost under $5 each, are also microwaveable and fairly sturdy. You won't feel too guilty if you lose or break one. :)
A while ago, I also got a Mr. Bento lunch jar: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/d67f/
It's awesome, and has four separate lidded compartments, so I can pack miso soup, rice and an entree in an insulated container, a side dish and fruit/dessert. This is great, but to be honest, it's a little too much food even though I'm not a light eater by any means. They make smaller versions called "Ms. Bento" with only 2-3 compartments:

Unfortunately, the lunch jars are pretty expensive, which is why I don't recommend getting this as a starter bento. They're also overkill unless you plan to pack a large amount of hot food.
Good luck! :)

I would highly recommend this site, to start. They also post lots of tips and there was recently a bento beginners class posted, which you could still go back and participate in even if it's in older posts. I've been making bento for about a month now, and it's lots of fun.
The most helpful thing I think is to find a lot of foods that you can make and freeze for the days that you don't have time to make bentos, so you have a stash. Like the people above said, leftovers are a lifesaver for this.
