It's a not-insignificant amount of work, but it makes lunch a bit more fun.

My tip is to NOT run out and buy an expensive bento box. Not everyone will agree because bento boxes are cute and it's fun to have one, but when you don't know if you'll want to do this regularly, dropping a bunch of money on it is silly. Try looking for a basic plastic lock-lid box. Lock & Lock is a popular brand, but these days there are cheaper generics everywhere-- Target, dollar stores, etc. Look for one with sturdy latches and a tight-fitting lid.

How big of a box to get is another question, but it really depends on how much you eat per meal. I have an 800 ml one with two removeable compartments that fits a sandwich and a small amount of other stuff: two peeled clementines and some tiny dill pickles, candy, etc. I also have a larger 1.1 liter box that easily fits a sandwich (cut in half and stacked on its sides), and a larger portion of something like cottage cheese, fruit, hummus and carrot sticks, edamame, etc. Both cost under $5 each, are also microwaveable and fairly sturdy. You won't feel too guilty if you lose or break one. :)

It's awesome, and has four separate lidded compartments, so I can pack miso soup, rice and an entree in an insulated container, a side dish and fruit/dessert. This is great, but to be honest, it's a little too much food even though I'm not a light eater by any means. They make smaller versions called "Ms. Bento" with only 2-3 compartments:

Unfortunately, the lunch jars are pretty expensive, which is why I don't recommend getting this as a starter bento. They're also overkill unless you plan to pack a large amount of hot food.
