Cry, baby, cry. Poor you didn't get some fic. Whine to the whole world about how your fic is more important that someone else's health or life.

I don't write or read fic, so personally I don't give a fuck. But I see my friends who participate in exchanges and even organize some and people SUCK. It's awful how people sign up for things and then don't write them (or don't send them in or whatever), while others worked hard.

There are a tons of ways to get around this if you care enough not to screw someone else. And I say this as someone who has fake accounts everywhere because I get anxious interacting with people under "my" name or account, and even then I still prefer being anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, who gives a fucking shit? "Worked hard?" My ass. If doing something for fandom is "working hard," then I'll quite my fucking job and start doing that, because obviously it's worthy of a salary.

This shit is playtime. It's what people do for fun. There's no true obligation behind it, and if there are people who consider it to be "work," then they need to quit fandom and find some other hobby, because there's really no point in spending one's free time on something that isn't enjoyable for its own sake. Your friends are whiny brats, complaining about people not completing voluntary activities that don't produce any benefit and that don't serve any purpose other than to entertain.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, sure it's not a job, of course it's a hobbie.

But writing a 200 pages longfic takes time and effort, despite being enjoyable. It sucks being given in return a half assed attempt at fic, obviously written at the last minute. Or better yet, nothing, since some people think there is no obligation behind it, so who cares.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
If it sucks, then stop doing it. There are always going to be people who opt to either not put effort into or not do something that's voluntary and that there are no consequences for not completing. And most of the time, they aren't going to have the excuse of a mental illness (or a personal emergency, or something that's even remotely understandable); they're just simply going to have been more interested in doing other things.

Either you write fic because you enjoy doing it, or you write fic because you expect something for it. People who are the latter should get used to disappointment.

I agree with the above anon that there's not much you can do about this if you want to participate in fests. Some people put in more effort than others, and assignments are a crapshoot, so you never know what you'll receive as gift fic. (Not to mention that some people put in plenty of effort and still turn out bad fic.)

Or better yet, nothing, since some people think there is no obligation behind it, so who cares.

This, otoh, you can do something about. Choose fests run by experienced and reliable mods who have a clearly stated pinchhitting policy along the lines of "every participant who turns in a fic on time will receive a fic in return." Still no guarantees on quality, of course, but at least you'll get your gift.

So, you see no problem with breaking promises and obligations that you've agreed to, as long as you're not being paid to complete them? And you're totally okay with people making promises to you and then flaking with no explanation, as long as you weren't paying them? Okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
This, yo. I'd bet all the change in my pockets that if this person were someone who didn't receive something they were promised with no explanation, they'd be here whining about how awful it was to not get their story (after they worked SO HARD to make one boohoohoo).

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. There'd be disappointment, sure, but I'd get over it rather quickly and I sure as fuck wouldn't whine about it (particularly since it's not awful to not get a story. That's pretty low on the list of things to actually get properly upset about, as far as I'm concerned).

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm okay with all of this if it has to do with something that has absolutely no meaning outside of base entertainment. Writing fanfic is a meaningless activity that's done solely for the fun of it. If you get upset because someone didn't write you the fanfic that they said they would, then I honestly believe that you need to get your priorities in order.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I get annoyed if someone makes ANY commitment and then blows it off without a good reason. If you think that entertainment- or hobby-related commitments are meaningless and you're under no obligation to do them, then don't make the damn promise.

This has nothing to do with OP, who has a mental illness that caused them to fail to fulfill their commitment. But if you seriously just don't give a shit because it's "just for base entertainment"? Then don't participate in elements of the hobby that require you to make a commitment.

Keeping promises and commitments you've made and expecting others to do likewise isn't having skewed priorities. Do you randomly ditch your friends when you make plans to spend time with them, since it's "just for entertainment"?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention the person who just wasted their time and energy beta-ing a fic that's never going anywhere. Beta-ing can be hard ass work, and I'd be fucking pissed if it were all for naught.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's fucking fic.

Try beta-ing a work that someone wants to publish only for that someone's agent to say that it isn't the right time to shop said work.

You people don't actually know what wasted time is. You're a bunch of entitled brats who think that fandom actually means something (*gasp* IT DOESN'T!). As I've said elsewhere, if you aren't getting enjoyment out of it, then stop fucking doing it. And while you're at it, stop complaining about shit that you've volunteered to do for fucking fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you here?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Why wouldn't I be?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
You seem to resent the idea of being dissatisfied with elements of your fandom, which is a popular theme in this community.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
If it's a popular theme in this community, then wouldn't it make more sense for me to be here?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
No. It would make more sense for you to not surround yourself with that which causes you to lash out at people who have differing opinions.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
But if that doesn't cause me distress, then why would I avoid it?

SA

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, looks like I'll see your closing thoughts tomorrow. Good night anon!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
IKR?

Hey person up there! Is flipping your shit fun for you? Because damn. I can think of a hundred things that don't make me go quite so ragey.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, actually, it is fun. I'm generally very calm and affable, but sometimes you just have to let go and lose your shit.

Oh, so you're trolling. Good to know.
