To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Jumping into interaction with social anxiety is like drinking bleach. Okay? You can stand there all day waving the Clorox bottle in our faces and telling us we just need to try it and we'll get used to it, but we will not do it, because we know it will cause us harm. Even if you drink bleach every day, with every meal, we.cannot.do.it. Our bodies cannot handle drinking bleach. Our minds cannot handle being the center of attention.

Stop.

Even if that "center of attention" is all in our paranoid heads. Because seriously, logically I know that most of the time nobody even notices me and yet..

ayrt

Exactly. I know for a fact that people are not staring at me or pointing and making faces behind my back, and they don't start whispering about me as soon as I leave the room. But I will never be able to NOT think it every time I find myself in a room with another person, despite years of therapy and anxiety medication and people telling me it's all in my head.

And if you truly believe you will never not be that way, you truly never will not be that way. Self-fulfilling prophecies sure are a bitch.

At some point you have to accept things are the way they are, and no asshole on the internet is going to magically do what decades of psychotherapy could not.

DA

Just because I accept the fact that I will always have anxiety doesn't mean I'm giving up or anything. Acceptance is not the same as some "self-fulfilling prophecy" bullshit.

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

I'm someone with an anxiety disorder who's managed (after a lot of difficulty) to have a fairly successful life. Most of the skills I've learned don't have to do with overcoming anxiety - they have to do with working around it. The more I can avoid situations that I know will make me anxious, or find ways to lessen the anxiety they will cause me, the more mental energy I have to deal with the anxiety-provoking things that I must do.

I will never not have anxiety. But that doesn't need to stop me from living my life. Sometimes I need help from other people. Occasionally I freak out and can't deal with anything for a little while. But that's okay, and accepting that this is how I am helps me more quickly recover from those times when I do freak out.

I spent years trying to force myself to just do things, to just get over it. It was only once I stopped trying to completely overcome my anxiety and accepted that it's something I have to live with that I was finally able to start leading a stable life.

Just out of curiosity are you one of those people who says the same thing about clinical depression?

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Please stop speaking for me and my anxiety. Because you are not the knower of all, either.

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
And here's where the SJW really starts coming in.

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, not wanting my condition lumped in with that condition as if they're one and the same is SO SJW of me.

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, of course. Because your anxiety is more special than everyone else's and we need to make sure to note that every time the subject is brought up.

Anxiety manifests differently in different people, but goddamn, you don't have a separate condition that makes you ~unique.~

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Where does the comment specifically mention you, anon?

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Don't you know? Generalizations are the worst things, EVER and even the mere notion that you are talking about others feelings is just ridiculous!

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
When you talk about "us" who have social anxiety, you're not just talking about yourself. You're talking about everyone here who has social anxiety. And maybe I'm a lucky one, but that description does not describe me, and I resent the implication that this commenter thinks they can speak for me just as much as the commenter way up above who's been really jerky thinks they can speak for my situation.

Because you can't. There may be an "us" when it comes to having social anxiety, but there is no uniform "us" to the way it presents itself.

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
So you'd rather have people telling you to suck it up and be normal already for christ's sake. Noted.

NEW RULE EVERYONE. FROM NOW ON NO ONE CAN DEFEND AGAINST PERSONAL ATTACKS LEST THEY ACCIDENTALLY DEFEND SOMEONE ELSE IN THE COMM. PASS IT ON.

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Way to make some wild leaps about what I'd rather have. Because that person up there is an asshole. But yeah, you're right about one thing:

Bleach Analogy can defend themselves all the want, but that's the thing. DEFEND THEMSELVES. I don't need their defense. I don't want it. And I don't want my condition lumped in with theirs as if it's the same.

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
No, defend yourself against personal attacks all you want. But defend yourself, not a bunch of people who maybe don't want to be defended with bad analogies. Just use "I/me" instead of "we/us"--it's not hard.

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
One makes you feel bad for a while, the other causes measurable physical harm and possible death...yeah, jumping into interaction with social anxiety is exactly like drinking bleach.

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
And with this statement you prove you know absolutely nothing about anxiety and the effects it can have on a person. Well done.

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Having experienced serious anxiety that has fucked up my life badly, I think I know the difference between that and drinking bleach, tyvm.

Re: To all saying "just do it and you'll get better"

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sure. Test anxiety, wedding anxiety, "do I buy this new car or not" anxiety. I'm sure.

Not the kind of crippling, longterm, not going away now or ever and you just have to learn to work around it because you're always going to be pants-wetting terrified of everyday occurrences like going to the post office, anxiety. The kind that puts severe stress on your entire body, leads to heart attacks and death - either as a result or because you become so messed up you just can't fucking take it anymore, anxiety.

You have not experienced that kind of anxiety, or you would not fucking make the comments you are making.

I'm talking about anxiety that forced me to drop out of school because I could not complete work--could not so much as frame a sentence to save myself from an F--or talk to professors or mental health professionals about the problem, which I think is a far cry from pre-wedding jitters or mild worry about big decisions. But thanks for playing.

And with this one you prove you know nothing about basic science. Not well done.

That analogy it's like... the worst analogy ever tbh.
