This method seemed the best for us (lice was rampant in our school to the point that I got so upset over looking like a boy that I refused to cut my hair for the next 6 years after the last incident): comb conditioner through your hair every morning and evening with a fine-tooth comb for two weeks. Don't bother picking nits, it's a road to nowhere. They have to hatch and be killed quickly.

I've also heard that lice hate the smell of tea-tree oil products.

I'm not so sure it's the smell of tea tree oil that gets rid of them. My parents were eco-freaks when I was growing up, and when my whole third grade class got lice, my mom sat me down with a little glass bottle of tea tree oil and a plastic nit comb and started going over sections of my hair-until the comb started to dissolve. Then she just put the oil in my hair after every time I washed it. And we did the usual stuff about washing your sheets and blankets and stuff and drying them on the highest setting. It worked. I don't know that I'd recommend doing the same, though, especially if the smell of the usual chemical treatments is a problem, because tea-tree oil has a very persistent and penetrating smell, and in large enough doses it can cause skin problems--like a lot of useful medicinal plants and medicines in general, it's both a medicine and a poison.
