Does mayonnaise really get rid of lice?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-03-28 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Does it kill the eggs too? My boss brought her awful brats into work a couple days ago and had me take care of them for a couple of hours until she got a babysitter. I thought it was strange they weren't in school but didn't really make a note of it until I realized today I have lice. *glowers*

Anyway. I really hate RID's smell and was wondering if there were any alternative lice treatments that have worked for you guys.

Oh my god that is horrible. What is wrong with your boss? Who DOES that? Seriously WHAT THE FUCK I'm honestly kind of outraged right now. What kind of shitty human being tells the people who work under her to look over their kids when they're not in school because they have lice. And doesn't tell them about the lice! What the fuck!

Anyway. That sucks. But I don't know anything about treating lice sorry. Wish I could help.

You can suffocate them with a sufficient amount of olive oil.

SA

Plus a fine comb for the eggs. Right.

Or petroleum jelly. You need to saturate your head, and wrap it in cling wrap for eight hours. Then you need one of these suckers http://nitwits.com.au/Nit_Combs , and either a *really* good friend, or copious amounts of both time and patience.

Don't bother with the pesticide treatments, the chemicals will toxify you, and most lice are resistant, these days. Manual suffocation and removal is the only way to go. (That site I linked provides the necessary steps.)

BTW, what were these kids DOING to/with you, that you got their lice??

I was told that geranium essential oil works well, but don't use too much. And use a fine comb for the eggs.

Mayonnaise might get rid of lice, but it probably won't get rid of the eggs which are really the problem at this point. You should get a nit comb for sure and go through your hair every day, because nits are hardy little fuckers and they can be found long after the lice are gone. And they are EXTREMELY hard to kill-many hardcore lice treatments still are unable to penetrate the eggs of lice. And you really should use RID in my opinion even if you hate its smell-better to be smelly for a little while than have lice for an extended period of time. It will be easier to capture them dead than to capture them live and worry that you still have living ones on your mayonnaise head.

Your boss sucks for having you babysit her kids and not even warning you that they had lice so you could protect your hair and clothes :P

Anyway, maybe someone has some alt answers, but I just know lice can be crafty stubborn fuckers and imo you should try to kill them dead as hard as you can.

When we had lice, the lice-killing shampoo did not do the trick, although I don't remember what kind it was. Several goddamn days of goddamn olive oil finally did.

My headache is just getting worse and I'm pretty nauseated so I realy don't want to get all up in RID fumes. But I have school tomorrow and now I'm all paranoid I'm just going to have a head of live lice salad tonight. I DON'T HAVE TIME TO HAVE LICE!

...this might be my leverage to get my mother to give me a short-short haircut again. She hates nit-combing. Maybe even more than she like nagging me about how beautiful my hair is long.

I just checked and the Minnesota Department of Health says that Mayonnaise can kill lice, as well as petroleum jelly (vaseline) and oil, because those can suffocate lice. They say to put it on, put on a shower cap or something, and leave it in for 8 hours (it can work in shorter, but that's to make sure it's dead).

For nits, you need to remove them with a louse comb, but they say that a mixture of vinegar and water can help remove them, by soaking your hair in it for 30-60 minutes and then combing them out. They also say that the mayo/vaseline/oil treatment can help the the nit removal be easier.

I've never had lice but it doesn't sound fun. :(

When I was younger, my mother used to crush the lice with her fingernails, more specifically the lice eggs (nits?). She said that combs and shampoos do really work but that... "when you want something done right, you've got to see it for yourself."

It worked.

My mother would do that as well! She would comb them out first but there was crushing and drowning involved afterwards! :D It just takes hours because my hair is so thick and long.

Your mom sounds awesome. I've gotten pretty good at catching, and popping the heads off of fleas.

I've heard that henna kills lice, but I haven't had lice since I was a small child (so not while I've been coloring my hair with henna) so I don't know if it works or not.

I have thick hair and end up around kids more than I like, so I've had lice quite a few times. My advice? Ditch the lice shampoo and other miracle cures.

Wash your hair really well, then do a second dose of conditioner and leave it in. Towel up, put on your favourite tv show, and have five boxes of tissues on hand. Then comb the fuck out of your hair with a nit comb.

You'll want to do this every day for a week (more or less depending on hair length/thickness) to be certain you get all the eggs. Won't hurt to give your bedclothes a wash too.

The only way to be rid of the little parasites for good is to get rid of all the eggs, so good luck with it. And don't go near your boss for a while - anyone who makes people take care of kids with lice and DOESN'T warn them probably has them herself.

I didn't even think about my boss. :O She tends to wear her hair up and doesn't really come out of her office except to smoke outside so it shouldn't be a problem but thank you for bring that to my attention!

I have nothing to add aside from remembering a Thai hairdresser told me that when she was a young child a lot kids at her school had lice so she spent a good number of years constantly getting her hair shaved off.

And this thread is freaking me out. I've never had lice and now I'm terrified I'll get it.

I feel bad for people who get lice. I can't get them. Seriously. My entire family, all of my siblings and my mother (well, not my dad) got them but when my mom combed my hair she would just find maybe one dead one, no nits or anything. I think my hair is too curly and coarse for lice or something?

Your boss sounds like an asshole and I'm sorry you're stuck with her. :( I don't have any helpful advice though it sounds like everyone else has you covered, so just wanted to say good luck with getting rid of the lice.

I don't have time to read all the comments so maybe it was suggested already.
Dog's flea treatment (like Frontiline) was the only thing that worked for me as a child with lots of thick, curly hair.

It does, but you have to wear it overnight [which means wearing a shower cap to bed *and* have a towel over your pillow]. But it does work if you do it for a couple weeks. /speaking from experience

Ugh, not too much helpful advice from my corner but I wish you the best of luck. My sister and I picked up head lice from somewhere back in middle school and it took months for us to finally get rid of them. It shouldn't be as bad for you since - with the two of us - we had to deal with an all or nothing extermination.

All I can say is keep patient and use your nit comb like there's no tomorrow.

This method seemed the best for us (lice was rampant in our school to the point that I got so upset over looking like a boy that I refused to cut my hair for the next 6 years after the last incident): comb conditioner through your hair every morning and evening with a fine-tooth comb for two weeks. Don't bother picking nits, it's a road to nowhere. They have to hatch and be killed quickly.

I've also heard that lice hate the smell of tea-tree oil products.
