I hope that's sarcasm...

DA

It could be their legit opinion. Which, really...why would you care if it was?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
true in my experience too

What is this show?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-28 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
My Mad Fat Diary, I think.

I can see the US remake being either really bad or sub par (they'd never get away with all the sex jokes/graphics if it was on MTV). Also I have this horrible feeling they'd make Rae skinny.

I haven't watched any of the US remakes, so I have nothing else to add.

Also I have this horrible feeling they'd make Rae skinny.

Wouldn't that directly oppose the premise? (Judging from the title...I've never seen the show.)

Sorry, I meant skinnier. Like she'd be a bit heavier than average weight.

I imagine they'd typically cast Nikki Blonsky. Nothing against her, she's a lovely actress, but I wish Hollywood would make more effort in actually finding good, diverse actors rather than falling back on the same token actors (IE. Casting John Cho as the token "Asian guy" before he became a big star). Also, I think Nikki Blonsky might not be able to portray Rae well.

I just wish they would air it in the US. I've been wanting to watch. *crossing my fingers it comes on Netflix soon*

On another note, I don't really get the reason for so many US remakes... it's not like our cultures so so drastically different there is no hope of your average viewer understanding. Yet, I'm so appreciative of the US Shameless remake, idk it's just good.

I never understood why America always remake English shows. We all speak the same language! And we get American shows and seldom remake those to Anglophy(?) them.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's all about the money.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
This and the fact that Americans as a target audience are believed to not being able to identify with anyone from a different country.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's because of commercials.

Licensing UK television is a lot harder because most if not all of the money is put up through government grants and fellowships. So you're not just negotiating with a studio exec - there's more paperwork involved. US television has a metric ton more commercials because corporate sponsorship is the major method of financing packages. You'll only see direct transference of UK shows on networks like PBS because a) that's our version of the way the whole UK system works and b) they don't rely on advertising so they can accommodate the different commercial breaks.

In the 90s when syndicated shows financed and filmed in Europe were more common, you'd see segments called 'eurominutes' - scenes that were 'optional' that were filmed for the regular broadcast that could be cut to make the show fit in a US timeslot. But that's expensive and not always practical. It either means the show abroad has lots of pointless fluff or the show in the US is missing elements that might be key to enjoying the finished product.

So it's cheaper and easier for US distributors to make their own version with their own built in financing and licensing than it is to figure out how to translate the original product.

It's also a bit about localisation, but not as much as some anglophiles and their 'if it's not ammurikun it must suck ammirite so they hate our glorious brits' would have you believe.

See, and this is the ONE show I would be okay with having a US version. I love My Mad Fat Diary, but if making a US version would mean that more (Americans) would understand the situations and hardships that go along with being fat, then I'm all for it. The less ignorance the better.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I have nothing to add except that I think the us version of shameless is so much better than than the uk version.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I agree in principle that it's stupid shows must be "remade" in America. On the other hand, there are several US version I prefer, including The Office, so...

I just imagined an American remake of Doctor Who and now my brain is sobbing in a corner

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry OP, I actually hope it does get a US remake. I've been trying to watch it since the overall premise is interesting, but I hate having to pause it and google stuff like "chuffing boot" every few minutes. US and UK may both speak English, but it's a very different kind of English and the cultures are significantly different as well.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
-sighs- And I'm just sick of people bitching about and/or hating on US versions for *being* US versions.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
If it does a good bit of business in the UK, the US will remake it. Sorry, that's the way it is. :(
