It would be really shitty if they made a powerful female character still experience deep pain over what amounted to a teenage romance but I guess anything else would give kids the Wrong Message.

Tenzin is 16 years older than Pema - so unless he broke it off with Lin because he wanted to date a toddler, they were most assuredly adults when their relationship ended.

Okay. I might've been misled by some fanart or something. I watched the series but it was a long time ago.

So: it'd still somewhat negate her strength if they made her story about how much she's still hurting about the guy who dumped her years ago. There isn't any indication he cheated on her--I got the sense that he literally needed to have kids and she either didn't want/could not have them--but even if he had, that'd be kind of disconcerting to find in a show meant for kids and teenagers. Not unless her arc was about Getting The Fuck Over It.

Wow. Female characters really can't catch a break, can they? How the fuck does having emotions "Negate her strength"? I was dropped by a guy about as many years ago as Lin was dropped by Tenzin and while I AM The Fuck Over It, if I met and had to work with him again I wouldn't be all sunshine and lollipops about it, just because. It brings up bad memories--not just of how he behaved, but of how badly I acted, too.

It's possible that Lin has some self-focused anger, a part of her that winces when she sees him because it reminds of her of being young and dumb and probably a little selfish and blind, too. Some people feel things really deeply and there isn't a damned thing they can do about it, no matter how many heartless assholes tell them to get the fuck over it.

That doesn't negate her strength. It illuminates it. She's allowed to not like or be uncomfortable around someone for whatever reason because she's a fucking human being. When the chips were down she sacrificed herself for him and his family with barely a second thought. That's what a strong, mature person does. She gets the hell over it, and gets the job done, despite any feelings she might have. That's far more admirable than if she and Tenzin were the best of friends, and a fantastic example for anyone.
