Mostly agree, but Rose's clingy and jealous behaviour (not to mention Mary Sue-ism) really amped up a good few notches after the end of the Cyberman return two-parter. It felt like her story arc came to a natural end in those two episodes and that is when she ought to have left (and would have done so on a really high note too). But she hung around, and I'll be fair the subsequent episodes were badly written, and was kinda irritating. Then she left, and kept coming back and back and back.

Oh man, that would have been SO GOOD. Ugh, now I'm depressed this didn't happen. Because I loved Rose, just hated the way her character development played out. It was so weird and almost deceptive. Like they were trying to tell us she had always been this way when no, thank you, we remember her being that way perfectly clearly, thanks.

Yeah, I mean imagine instead of Mickey staying at the end of the Cyberman Intro, Rose did (to stay with the heartbroken Pete as his daughter and heal his soul or something) and Mickey kept on with the Doctor. A couple of episodes of goofing around, Mickey and the Doctor getting irritated with each other making out all over the TARDIS, and when the Doctor starts getting wangsty (cause Ten would) Mickey points out at least he knows, Jackie will never know that her daughter has gone to another world. So the Doctor goes to tell her (gets beaten up by Jackie again, because seriously that never stops being funny) finds out about the Ghostshift and decides to USE it to boot Jackie into Pete's world to complete her family. Daleks, Cybermen, and universe hopping Pete's still happen, but this time when the wormhole closes and the Doctor burns up that supernova he says goodbye to a Jackie happy to be with her daughter and a Rose happy to be with her dad and a rebuilt family going on to live her life without pining for the Doctor.

A happy ending to the whole thing, and without the character assassination of Rose the writers inflicted on her when she stayed after her arc closed out.

...I love you. Dude, if you weren't an anon I'd friend you.

In light of that great little fix-fic-type summary, may I ask how would you handle The Stolen Earth/Journey's End without Rose et al coming back? (I have ideas, but I'm too self conscious to talk about them in case they have some glaring flaw I didn't notice).

I would think that by that point the butterfly effect would have fluttered things up so much you'd have a different story. Although you could simply have UNIT be stronger, give Martha something real to do instead of that anagram key to blow up the entire planet. Its been a while since I watched it, but IIRC Rose spends a good chunk of it doing nothing or just sitting out of contact, and Martha the same so there is scope for amalgamating a couple of lightweight storylines into a single stronger one.

Haha, yeah, my solution would be have to involve rewriting a bunch of little things (maybe even some really big things, if I wanted to be presumtuous) in season 4 unfortunately.

Honestly, if I could travel back in time and hypnotize RTD, I'd do something entirely different in the finale. Have the message and the character development be totally different. Keep Caan, and Davros as the villain, but have Donna's whole George Bailey thing in Turn Left stay just that simple and be foreshadowing (i.e., have a key moment in the finale echo the climax of The Runaway Bride) not full of predestination crap, have the person who helps out Donna in Turn Left be someone who isn't Rose, and basically take the finale in a totally different direction that doesn't involve all the companions coming back just for fanservice and distracting attention away from Donna and from the plot.
