16. [SPOILERS for Supernatural]

two points. first, I think it's okay to have a critical mindset and be in fandom, as long as you don't descend into hateration and you're reasonable about it. fandom is not just for squeeing.

second, i think with a lot of things, and certainly with supernatural, it's sometimes good to appreciate something for what it is instead of focusing on what it could be or might have been, especially when there's something good, some kind of good at least, that is present there (as I think is the case with Supernatural). It's trite and cliched to say "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good" but it's trite for a reason. focusing on ways in which something is imperfect can prevent one from getting enjoyment that really is present.

these two statements might seem kind of contradictory but w/e. i think a critical stance is fine and a good thing, i'm just not sure that i agree with your specific critical attitude in this instance. supernatural is at its most basic level a story about two dudes, a sweet car, and killing monsters. i'm basically fine with that. if you aren't, or you want to point out flaws, that's good and valid; i just want to say that the simplicity of that basic premise doesn't necessarily mean its flawed.

hopefully that made some kind of sense, and isn't just banal rambling. i don't know. i'm going to stop typing now.

"don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good"

i've never heard that before actually. i like it c:

also, yes OP, don't stay away from the fandom just because you don't wanna harsh some squee.

god i hate the word 'squee'

"supernatural is at its most basic level a story about two dudes, a sweet car, and killing monsters."

My biggest gripe is actually that I thought that was what the series was going to be about, going in; ghost-of-the-week procedural. And there are some real gem episodes about just that.

And I keep thinking 'Okay, the latest overcomplicated theological mytharc is almost over...they're going to go back to being normal hunters now, right? Who go after ghosts and monsters and also who don't hate each other?'

And I finally accepted that it's never happening.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't you mean 7.5? Unless I have completely lost count on how long it has been going on.

I don't think it's going to better either, but as long as you don't yell at other fans that they should share the opinion, keep on hate/indifference-watching it.

Ahem. Yeah. Halfway into season eight =/= eight and a half. Pardon the fail.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I think it's been good -- say, seasons 3-5. And I think it still has it's moments. But the last few seasons have just not matched those three. ANd I'm hanging on out of stubborness, kind of like you.

Out of curiosity, who's the woman in the picture? I've only made it half of S2 so far and bits of S4 and S5.

That's another version of Meg. (She was the young blond Demon in season one and the same Demon who possessed Sam in season two.)

I was so excited when I saw Meg and thought that this would be a secret to finally stir up some Meg/Castiel wank. A little disappointed tbh. The wank over on Tumblr has been pretty mediocre. People defensively snarling at Meg over Dean/Castiel.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! This would be great, anon. I think you should make your own secret.

It's been happening; someone kindly provided me with a link when I was complaining about her death a while back.

.....are you my sister?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
So far as I know neither of them is in fandom :)

We can be sisters in Supernatural-related hopeless optimism, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well OP, all I can say is it's a highly subjective judgement. I personally thought it was good in Seasons 1-3, great in S4-S5, moderately disappointing in S6-S7, and this season it's getting pretty good again.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think what bothered me worst was that at the end of the hellhound episode, it felt like the brothers were in a place where they could accept and trust one another, that we were finally past all the secrets and lies and resentment and drama, only to see it start right up again in the next outing. As a viewer, it was all the jerking around I could take.

But mileage does indeed vary, and there have been some fun episodes this season.

So you've watched a show you don't really like for eight years.
...good on you? Seems pointless.

Why is this marked as a spoiler? This picture shows nothing but a character that's been on the show.

I would guess because the secret poster figured that there would be spoilers about the character in the comments, as presumably that is the incident that set the secret poster off.

As I gave up in season 5, though, and am only going by spoilers I read on Tumblr and the like, I can't be positive.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
- Yeah, I know I don't need a medal for beating my head against a brick wall. But what's frustrating is that I have this mental image of what this show could be, two brothers (who aren't constantly at one another's throats) confronting weekly cases involving ghosts and monsters. I like the idea of recurring characters popping up here and there, instead of dying whenever the drama quotient is highest. And I catch glimpses of that show and get my hopes up.

But that's not the show the runners want to make, and I've quit thinking they'll change their minds.

- Meg hasn't been on for a while; knowing that there was recently a straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back incident involving her seemed like a spoiler to me.

I gave up after Ellen/Jo/Anna in Season 5, so I can empathize some. Although I not only gave up on fandom (for the most part; I still dip my toes in on occasion) but on the show as well. I'm sorry that this latest thing was enough to get you to give up on the show being better. I've experienced that feeling in several shows (I think House was the latest?) and it totally stinks.

[personal profile] wake_the_dragon 2013-03-30 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I gave up after season five too. They'd killed several characters I really liked, like Bela and Jo, as well as I just sort of lost interest after season five. I couldn't get into season six so I just stopped watching completely.

From the depths of my heart - thank you for not harshing people's squee. I haven't been able to read episode reactions from some people for two years. I don't know why they watch anymore because they hate it and make sure everyone knows it. It's really considerate of you not to do that. I know the show's downhill and still going, but I love Sam and Dean and even sometimes love the show itself. I need to get my squee wherever I can. ♥

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Anytime. I still lurk (whatever else you can say about this show, it attracts good fic writers), and reply to comment threads where people are already complaining about something that bothers me, but blasting over general fandom spaces with 'WHY ARE YOU WATCHING THIS SHOW, DON'T YOU KNOW IT SUCKS' seems pointless.
