Slightly OT, but there was a character I seriously disliked in another series who was tortured and killed and the only thing I could think when it happened was, "thank fuck they're gone".

I felt kind of bad for thinking that about someone, fictional or not, but my joy of not having to see their mug on screen anymore pretty much overruled everything.

You know, I really tried to like Walking Dead. I love the premise! I cried over the Telltale game! And I just... I can't stand any of these characters at all.

I watched through to the halfway point of Season 3 and realised that I don't care enough about these people to want to see what happens to them. You can have characters who are complete assholes and still be interesting and fun to watch, but... none of them achieve that for me. Everyone's either extremely shitty or extremely obviously villainous. Redeeming features are few and far between.

It also doesn't help that this show seems to really hate women and them having any control over their situation. All of the main men are controlling and creepy - Shane was bad, but then Rick decides to become Shane 2.0 in Season 3. By the time the Governor came along, he wasn't an effective villain for me because he was just adding to a conga line of white men with control issues.

Idk, I feel like maybe I'm missing the point but I don't get why so many people care. I haven't read the comics, so maybe it's better there? Either way, I think I'll stick to the video games.

The big point of Season 3 for Rick, culminating in the most recent episode, was that trying to be Shane 2.0 was bad and wrong and he should stop, which he has now realized and is making amends for.

Out of curiosity, can I ask what you found unlikable about Daryl, or Carol, or Herschel? Glenn, admittedly, had a kind of self-centered reaction to his and Maggie's ordeal at the Governor's hands, but he realized his errors and he and Maggie worked it out.

Ah, the Telltale TWD game; proof that you actually can have a zombie story with human and likeable characters (or unlikeable characters whom you still sympathise with). Even if I didn't already hate the tv show, pretty much for the same reasons you listed, the game just makes it look just that much worse by comparison.

But then again, that seems to be a trend in zombie stories. 28 Days Later is the only other one I can think of that actually had characters I cared about.

(Maybe the Gov won't rape her but you can't tell me he doesn't intend to. If it doesn't happen it's only because he has to go kill some folks and Andrea gets rescued before he returns.)

Almost all of AMC's big hit shows are bursting with misogyny. Walking Dead is really no exception. Honestly, I am getting tired of the 'kill the female' that seems to happen in so many shows--Rita in Dexter, Lori early this season in Walking Dead. But more than that I really find fans always hating the female character is really disturbing. It's 'cool' to hate Skyler in Breaking Bad. It's cool to hate Andrea. Or Michonne.

Andrea's made some bad choices: she's almost the stereotype of the woman who allies herself with the most powerful male--Shane, the Governor, etc. It's partly survival, I guess. But Shane made mistakes, and this season has been nothing BUT shitty decisions made by Rick having terrible consequences. Yet strangely no one seems to want Rick to be tortured, huh? That's what I have a problem with.

I don't care for Andrea, but the absolute insistence on hating the females in these canons really is beginning to get old to me. Internalized misogyny much?

Fandom's hatred of Lori actually made me start liking her in protest of all the misogyny being thrown her way. And when I got spoiled that they'd killed Rita, I stopped watching Dexter entirely. I reeeally don't get all the Michonne hate; she didn't get much character development in the first half of the season, but the vitriol aimed at her for "the things she did to the Governor" is just bizarre.

Andrea kind of frustrates me, though. Her vagina is basically a psychopath detector, and she seems willfully blind to things which strike me as painfully obvious, even when considering only the things her character has been allowed to see. I personally don't want to see her tortured, but I've been screaming at the screen for her to stop being so fucking stupid for most of this season (actually, in much the same way that I've been screaming at Rick).

The fandom's reaction to women in this series kind of disturbs me, too -- mostly during season 2 with the "Andrea good, Lori bad" dynamic, but now with the virulent Michonne-hate. My complaint about how fandom has reacted to Andrea this season has been objections to her becoming "less badass" rather than her being incredibly naive and gullible. That's really been my complaint about the fandom in general -- in which being "badass" and killing shit is the main criterion for liking a character, rather than having thoughts, feelings, or characterization.

Maybe it's just the cause/effect part of my brain talking, but you really think Andrea has done anything that deserves horrendous torture? She's no doubt made countless mistakes (spoiler: characters are human and make stupid decisions sometimes!) but the consequence for making mistakes isn't days of no doubt horrific physical pain. That just doesn't add up.
