AND, OR, NOT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought about making a secret about this, but it's really not a secret in any way:

I really wish AO3 had a "not" option when searching. I want this fandom, but not this pairing. I wants AUs, but not high school AUs. There are so many things I'd like to NOT.

Re: AND, OR, NOT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be really handy. Because while I don't generally have OTPs I do have DNW pairings. So a general "Everything but a/g" would be delightful.

Re: AND, OR, NOT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
You can do that. Really trivially, actually.

In the "search within results" field of the search thingy on the right, just do -"x" for whatever search term you don't want. -"Pairing" or whatever.

Thank you!

Bless you, wise soul. I knew that worked for Google, but never thought it would apply to AO3 too.

Go to advances search and type "-[thing you don't want]" on the appropriate line (you can do this with characters, as well.

No problem. (-:

What's the appropriate line though? AO3 searching doesn't seem to be very clear about what goes where and what effect it has when it goes there.

Re: AND, OR, NOT

[personal profile] fenm 2013-03-30 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's the same lines as when you post a story. So pairings would be "Realtionshhips".

Re: AND, OR, NOT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
You can also do this from the fandom page by typing in

-[tag]

in the Search within results field. Only one line and it works for all types of tags. ;)

Yessssssss. Thank you so much. I'd been trying to figure out how to do that, too, because I'm really not big on crossovers but a couple of the fandoms I'm interested in, crossovers seem to be the "big" thing and take up the first few pages of listings. -_-

I would kill for this. Especially in categories, a 'femslash' NOT 'multi' option would make my life. I wonder if somebody could write a Greasemonkey script for that or something.

Re: AND, OR, NOT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's entirely doable within the existing architecture, though. At least it should be. Do a search with whatever tag / fandom / character, check the category for F/F, and then go down to Search Within Results and do -multi. The one thing is I'm not sure if multi is the right search term to get there but a little experimentation should let you figure that out.

Oh man, if this is possible I will partly feel like a prize fool for not having realised before, but mostly just love you forever. I thought that only worked for tags, and that categories didn't work like tags. But I might have given up too soon. I shall go and try again.

Re: AND, OR, NOT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
NA

You can exclude Multi, F/F, M/M, etc. with the Search Within Results function. AO3's search function is a thing of beauty and I'm so glad it's back. *snuggles search function close to heart*

I would be unspeakably grateful if this happened. Seriously, it would be a fucking godsend. There are so many things where I'm like "I love X" and "I hate Y" (or where I love Y, and I love X, but I don't like X and Y to overlap), but the archive is completely loaded with five billion hits of them overlapping.

Re: AND, OR, NOT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's completely possible to do this already

seriously there's like three posts upthread about how to do it

This would be so handy in my bigger fandoms; I'm a bit particular about my Avengers pairings, of all things, and being able to avoid pairings I'm not super keen about would be really nice.

Re: AND, OR, NOT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
People upthread already mentioned it, but I'll say it again: you can totally do this with the search function. If you're not used to it it might be a bit confusing at first, but once you've gotten the hang of it the search function is one of the best features of the site.

Re: AND, OR, NOT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
If there were only one Not option, and that was Not High School AU, I'd still be all over it.

Re: AND, OR, NOT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
Going to ask here, because I already knew about the -"tag" thing, but I can't remember how I used to search for fics with a specific word count since the tagging system came back. 1000 - 5000 words is usually all I can handle unless the premise really grabs me.

Help?

Re: AND, OR, NOT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there's a field for word count on the advanced search page, so you could always use that.

If you don't like the advanced search page and you really want to use the clickable search bar thing instead, I don't think there's any way to get it to filter by word count. But what you could do is run a search using the search bar, and then just paste "&work_search[word_count]=1000-5000" into the URL.

Thank you!
I will definitely give this a go.
