I've heard a few people say that they would never give Sherlock a shot because the fandom is so awful that it ruined the show for them even though they've never seen it before.

I've never seen Sherlock either (because I just haven't yet gotten interested in seeing it) but think that's...a rather unfortunate way of thinking. OTOH, maybe I just don't understand what it's like for a fandom to be awful enough to induce that much hatred. Can anyone share their opinions on this or say if this has ever happened to you?

I'm sort of that way with Supernatural, I've started to watch the show, yet avoid the fandom like the plague

I was really annoyed by the ship wars in Community so I didn't watch it for a while. Then I watched it, loved it, but swore I'd never get into one of those ships. Now I ship Jeff/Annie like no one's business. Oops.

(though I don't care if anyone ships Jeff/Britta, so, no ship war here).

I became a huge MLP fan before the "Brony culture" developed and got out of hand, but if I hadn't, I know I wouldn't go near the show now, and I have some friends who won't ever. It saddens me, because I still think it's a wonderful show, but I can't blame anyone who won't watch it because of the fandom.

I have to admit that based purely on F!S exposure, I'm never going near Homestuck.

Funny, 'cause F!S is the reason I started reading Homestuck.

I used to think that I'd never go into Supernatural fandom, but it happened anyway. These days, fandoms don't really sway me when I want to get into a new show or something. There are always nice people too.

ETA: Although I suppose I wouldn't touch MLP with a mile-long stick.

Supernatural, Sherlock, Merlin, Homestuck, Fate/Stay anything, Big Bang Theory, Avengers and all related movies, every Pixar movie that came out in the past five years, Dr. Who, Skyrim, Mass Effect...

actually you can pretty much google every movie, tv series, and video game that came out in the last five years and I don't even want to touch it. Thanks fandom.

Homestuck, MLP, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, movies/comics focusing on Batman (but not the rest of the Gotham crowd, excluding Damian). I actually watched the first season of Sherlock but developed a burning hatred for everything related to it due to the fandom (though I didn't find it that great anyway, so it wasn't a big loss).

I'm that way over Avengers and Sherlock. And I actually quit watching MLP because mild interest in the show was outweighed by major dislike of the fandom.

Oh dear God, everything I have seen from/about the fandom and how they interact with the characters and stories makes me want to avoid that show more than anything else.

SUPERNATURAL. i love comedy horror but would not be able to forgive myself if i became involved in that fandom. so basically i won't watch supernatural for the same reasons i won't try cocaine.

Firefly. Though I DID give it a try, but not much of one. The way the fans go on it's like it turns shit to gold with every frame... they just waaaay oversell it. I was being so much more critical of it than I would have otherwise, I couldn't enjoy it, all because I was told it was THE GREATEST THING EVER by a thousand people.

Can we also mention shows that we just put off for a long time because of fandom, but eventually watched/opened up the the idea of watching?

I did that with Classic Who because the fans were so revoltingly superior and elitist and vicious and wanked about how ~SUBLIME~ Old Who was and how New Who was trash that was inferior in every way, because I just knew that my irritation with the fandom would color my perception of any Old Who I tried, and I would invariably be disappointed. I was really disappointed that they pissed in my Cheerios too, because I had always wanted to check out Old Who.

Eventually, my Old Who fandom so much (mainly because I scrupulously avoided every hint of them and their poison for over a year) and then I did try out Old Who. And then I could appreciate it properly. I now absolutely love it, but I lol at the idea that it was some sublime wonderful deep piece of art that is ~so much better~ than New Who. They're about equal in quality, IMO, albeit with quite different strengths. I'm really glad I waited until I stopped resenting the fandom so much, though.

Sherlock, definitely. The fandom even soured me on the RDJ movies just because I hear "Sherlock" now and immediately associate it with obnoxious BC stans.

Other fandoms have turned me off (Homestuck, Hetalia, Doctor Who, MLP, Avatar/Korra, and Supernatural primarily), but generally the fandom doesn't sour my view of the source material, it only makes me burnt out enough to never want to check out the show/game/whatever.

Sherlock. Supernatural. (I don't watch much tv in any case, but anyway.) And Twilight (anyone remember the Unicorn-gasm fic?)

The Sherlock fandom made me realise that I will probably be not watching Season 3 past seeing what bullshit Moffat comes up with for Sherlock surviving that fall.

On the bright side, it also pushed me to try Elementary out of spite for all the WATSON IS A WOMAN OMG NO BOOBS IN OUR SHERLOCK wank, and I ended up absolutely adoring it.

Homestuck, until recently. (A friend suggested I should give it a try, and didn't push, so, I gave it a try, and got hooked.)

I'm more likely to drop something with extreme prejudice because of the fans than never pick it up (Young Justice (the original comic) being the biggest example), if it doesn't live up to the hype, and the fans just won't accept that you might like something else better.

Hetalia. I just wanted to stay as far away from the fandom as possible.

The Witcher. Their fans ragging on every other RPG on the market, about how their game is so mature, is a real RPG, not a sell out, etc. It doesn't help that their devs basically have the same attitude.

Glee. All I ever hear is how unpleasant it is and the fandom whining is incredible. Never watched an ep. Homestuck I'm sick of the fandom and won't try it again (couldn't get past the boring first act on my previous attempt).

Tell the truth, except for FandomSecrets, I tend only to tumblr sometimes (not daily and I'm getting ready to unfollow some negative blogs) and reading fic/commenting on fic. All fandoms just seem so whiny and negative nelly these days.

Dr. Who. Star Trek. Supernatural. Sherlock.

Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad, Elementary.

My flist has been super obnoxious about each of them in turn, long after the point where if I were even the slightest bit interested in them, I would have already been watching. (Less true for Elementary than the others, obviously, since it's only been on the air since September or whenever, but the OTT hype did start much earlier than that.)
