Right? You had Glenda, a powerful witch in her own right, not willing to lift a finger to help the Munchkins who were being terrorized by the Wicked Witch of the East. No, it had to be non-magical Dorothy with her house who dispatched the witch.

Yup. Seems pretty silly to get all worked up over a non-Oz guy being the 'hero' when a non-Oz woman (well, girl) did what no actual Oz citizen could. I guess it's only okay if a girl does it?

Personally, I blame James Franco. (Sorry, sir.) He isn't just as well liked in fandom circles. If the movie had gone with its original casting with Robert Downey Jr. as the Wizard, I don't think there would be hardly any wank because everyone would be dazzled by RDJ's brilliance. (That and the role of the Wizard would have suited him better than Franco. Franco is a good actor but this really wasn't his role.)

I had to google the guy (I'm terrible with names) and I guess i can see that. I mean - i've seen like...two things he's in? And i don't remember him at all but, just seeing his picture i was like 'oh, that jackass'. So - wow, yeah, some kind of weird knee-jerk thing there going on.

See, your first thought was, "Oh, that jackass." And you are unbiased. Maybe I am onto something here.

I wish there was some way to test this theory. Like if they had a screen test with RDJ reading so I get people's reactions on it.

What's funny is, the first time we saw it I leaned over and whispered to Kittendaddy, "I could totally see Robert Downey Jr. in that role!".

I think he would've been tons better. I find James Franco to be kind of sleazy and scummy, TBH.

Yeah, I am sure he's a nice guy in real life but playing a late 19th century man where he is supposed to be a likable rogue is bad casting. Just bad casting. Reminds me of hiring Keaunu Reeves to play Jonathan Harker in Dracula bad. Nope. Nope. Nope. Not going to buy it.

RDJ would have been fun. Heck, I'd take just about anyone else. Sam Rockwell would have been great. He can do likable rogue well.

Wait... RDJ was supposed to play Oz? This amuses me because my friend and I, when we saw it, looked at Oz and kind of felt he was like a smarmier, less succesful/creative turn of the century Tony Stark. A poor copy in many ways, but if they meant to cast RDJ that just...

It's a pity; James Franco is quite good in a role that suits him. Actually, though, the impression I got is that he and Rachel Weisz at least knew they were in a corny movie and decided to just have fun and mess about. Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis I'm less sure of (though I think Kunis took it more seriously).

Thing is, Munchkin Land was the East - in other words, the lands of of the Wicked Witch of the East. Glinda was the [Good] Witch of the South, so she was likely having to concentrate on defending her land from attacks from both East and West, and couldn't extend herself to help the Mucnhkins, even if she was supposedly (according to what I just read on Wikipedia about the original books) the strongest of the four Witches (there actually was a Witch of the North too).

Now I am imagining the motivation behind sending Dorothy in being similar to that of sending a Hobbit to lob the Ring into the volcano.

And... she was what? Out for a walk and just happened to be in Munchkinland when she saw a house fall and was like "Hm! Better take a quick peek and then grab some butter before I head home"?
