Eh, isn't symmetrical features one of those things people subconsciously look for in a mate/partner? The more symmetrical your face = the more attractive you are the majority of the population.

This is why people find Bill Clinton so attractive, his face is as symmetrical as many models.

IDK, I've found some people's crooked grins to be rather hot sometimes.

It's a general trend, not a hard and fast rule. They have done studies on this and found that, statistically speaking, people find more symmetrical faces to be more attractive than less symmetrical faces. It's a sign of good health, which most people tend to subconsciously pay attention to when rating potential mates.

OT, but I can't watch anything with Kristen Stewart in it because her faith bothers me so much. It's just the expressions she makes, man. And the way her mouth/teeth looks when she gapes or gives that "huh?" look (which is often) drives me insane.

SA.

*face bothers me

[personal profile] poisonenvy 2013-03-30 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahah, I was seriously sitting here going "Uhm... I didn't realize her faith came up so much." And then you started talking about her mouth/teeth and I was even more confused. And then finally I clued in and then I scrolled down. ... Probably could have saved myself a lot of confusion if I had just done that in the first place.

This is only half true.
You are right about symmetry being something that people at large consider attractive, but if the face is >too< symmetrical it often has the opposite effect (like Uncanny Valley).

An almost symmetrical face with one or two tiny flaws is believed to be the most attractive. For example a person with a little scar or mole, slightly crooked smile, etc.

Yeah, I knew that but I just didn't mention it because I don't think it is possible to have a 100% symmetrical face. But great additional info.

Yeah, no one has a completely symmetrical face. Like how you can go to those sites that will split a photo and make two symmetrical faces and they always look completely different from each other and really scary.

Some of them don't look too bad. But some are just like, "Ew."

That's in part because one side of your brain is better at distinguishing facial features than the other.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That is true. That's why it requires intelligence to be able to see past it. Otherwise you're just another mammal who's here to keep the population growing. It's quite pathetic, really.

It's just an evolutionary cast off from when how physically perfect someone was determined who the best mate (to protect and create offspring) would be.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
...are we still having the "you can't help what you're physically attracted to" debate? Because, if so, it's still stupid. You can't help what you find physically attractive. Or physically unattractive, for that matter.

Intellectually, I know there's nothing "wrong" with their faces. But I still don't want to look at them.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, you can help who you're physically attracted to. It's superficial.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Not "who," dingbat. "What." You can't help what you're physically attracted to. The "who" depends on personality a bit, doesn't it?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who finds most male models indifferent to actively unattractive, yet would definitely break me off a piece of Mr Clinton, I would like to say that though the symmetry thing is definitely true, I'm pretty sure that's not the only or even main reason people find Bill Clinton attractive.

And I find Bill Clinton annoying, but have a crush on Kavita Ramdas. This explains a lot. (My own face IRL is curved in the same way as Blake Lively's here: http://www.youbeauty.com/face/galleries/face-symmetry-of-celebrities#1 )
