Oh, good point. I keep forgetting that TOS is a lot shorter.

But fair enough. Like I said, I haven't seen TOS, so the association jumps more to the EMH for me. (Doing Voyager fic for Camp NaNoWriMo, though, and I DO intend for him to use that line, so I'm probably not really helping there!)

Well, to be fair, I think it's also one of those things that became more of a Thing in the popular imagination after the fact. I mean, he does say it on several occasions in the series. But I think it also kind of caught in peoples' minds and after the series ended became more and more a part of his character and it became more and more a part of why people remembered - it became part of the caricature of the character, if that makes sense, that people remembered him for in the popular imagination.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is, even if you had seen TOS, it might not stick in your mind that much just from that, but it's still his line and when anyone else says it it's pretty much a reference to him because he's who everyone thinks of when they say it. But if you want the EMH to use it, go for it!

(Also you should watch some TOS! Some of the episodes are really good and it's surprisingly watchable most of the time and there's little things like this that come up later on. It's worth a little time to watch, like, the Horta episode, the Tribble episode, City On The Edge Of Forever, Amok Time, the Romulan episode, at least. I mean, if you feel like it.)

Yeah, true - people grabbing on to tropes. Like people remembering it as, "Beam me up, Scotty" or "Luke, I am your father", despite those precise lines never being used, but they've sort of become... part of a collective unconsciousness?

(I'd have to rely on whatever Sci Fi shows - it showed TNG, Voyager, TOS, and now Enterprise, and I'm HOPING that DS9 is next - when TOS was showing, I watched the first episode and found it really... cringeworthy, I guess? And didn't continue watching.)

Yeah, exactly. Except in this case McCoy actually did say it so at least it was somewhat justified.

Yeah TOS is very, very much hit or miss. There are some episodes that are just bad, or way too campy, or way too dated, or just weird and kind of dull. It was such a different time and the way that TV was made was so different. But it also had some really, really good episodes that are, I think, pretty much canonical Trek, and that absolutely stand up today. It's too bad you don't have Netflix or something because that's probably the ideal way to watch it.

But if DS9 is next that also wouldn't be so bad. Because DS9 is also totally amazing. And I hope you watch it and enjoy it.

Gosh, I love Star Trek.

Heh, fair enough. But yeah, a bit exaggerated.

When we get more decent internet (at the moment, we're struggling with 15GB a month, I'm not downloading ANY episodes - and Netflix is a very different system in Australia!), I might look some up. And I'm hoping DS9 IS up next! The order can be somewhat weird - before the TNG run I watched, it was Enterprise, then Voyager before that. The recent TOS run was the first time it showed.
