Sometimes a reader has preferences about what they want to feel when they read. Sometimes they don't want to feel sad.

nayrt

That's a legitimate preference but we live in an imperfect world and I'm not sure that there's a way to allow them to have that information beforehand that doesn't also spoil. and I think they're both valid concerns and my feeling is that it's probably okay to have it so that sometimes people read things they don't want to. I mean, there has to be a limit to what things you don't want to read that you can have warnings for, right?

At AO3 you can put Notes at the bottom of the page with a link to them at the top of the page. A lot of time people will but warnings in those notes, so that those who don't want to be spoiled don't read them, those that prefer a warning can check it out. Problem solved!

For me, a warning of things like character death does not spoil the fic at all. It simply either let's me know to avoid that if I'm not looking for depressing fic, or gives me a heads up so I'm more emotionally prepared. It's just a nice thing to have and actually can make me appreciate your fic more.

That's why there are category tags like "tragedy" and "angst". That should be warning enough.
