Yeahhhh... death fic has always been the biggest in "you should warn for this!" even back when I was reading fic in 2001. A lot of people just don't want to read fic involving death or depressing themes at all, we have enough of that shit in our real lives. We don't need some asshole who doesn't warn because they want an ~impact~ to ruin our day.

Yeah, this... If I'm reading fic to cheer myself up after a really shitty day, I'd rather have a fic spoiled for me than read an unmarked or weirdly-categorized death fic without realizing it's a death fic.
And really, if the writing is any good, knowing in advance that Character X is going to die shouldn't take away from the emotional impact of the scene anyway. Nearly everyone knows that Mufasa dies in the Lion King, and yet if you put the movie on and watch it with a bunch of people, the room still goes dead quiet when you get to that scene.
