Character Death is a trigger too, k?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister passed away this past fall and I had an extremely hard time of it, and so I buried myself in fandom and fan fiction to get away. I ended up reading an epic-long Snarry fic where Harry died at the end WHICH THE AUTHOR DID NOT WARN ABOUT and had a massive panic attack and got severely depressed because of it.

I'm not saying that every death has to be warned for (god, of course not), but readers get so emotionally invested in the main characters and to have them suddenly die at the end? That's godawful painful, and some people just don't want to have to deal with that.

Mention in your A/N that there's something to warn for that's super spoiler-y and then place the "major character death" label under a cut, or behind a color block, or at the end of the fic. SOMEWHERE. You have no idea how hard a major character death can hit a person. I can-- and have-- spent up to 10-15 minutes sobbing my eyes out. Heck, I have had days utterly ruined because of it. And I KNOW I'm not alone in that.

Why not just warn for it and let people decide whether they can handle it or not?
