Same. I enjoy characters and pairings, but same to the "never push my hot button". But then, I'm asexual so....

For me it's the opposite. I can be attracted to animated/comic characters, ship them and entertain myself for hours by thinking up interesting plots for them, but I I very rarely feel that way about live action characters. And even then they're guys like Jonathan from the Mummy movies who are really cartoony somehow. I guess I need the characters to be far removed from reality in order for my imagination to get going.

...Is that icon Maya the Bee? Hello, my childhood, how are you today?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
I second the removal of reality part. Coming up with stories and attraction for characters that safely don't exist was my way of ensuring that no one would be offended, even if those thoughts were only in my head... Thinking thoughts about real life people just makes me feel terrible...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people agree with you? It's something I would never talk about outside of a fandom space because yeah, it's considered pretty creepy by the mainstream.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah me neither, and I admit it kind of baffles me, but is that really a big deal? I'm still drooling over live-action fictional characters... Glass houses, etc...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, good for you?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Me neither.

Er...that's nice?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
How is this a secret? This seems to be the norm. That's why there are so many secrets *about* only being attracted to animated characters...

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, because a couple of good friends have major animated-source ships. I'd be embarrassed to tell them, "You're seriously boring me now."

I could have included that in the secret, huh? Sorry.

I used to think it was weird, too, but I find that a lot of it is about the voice acting. The combination of an attractive voice with certain features somehow works. Also, the types of animated characters I find appealing are the types of people I would never want to actually meet irl (morally dubious villains, killers, demons, stoic assholes who dgaf) but are too much fun in over-the-top animated action sequences. I think them being animated helps solidify that it is only fantasy.

I mean, shit, if I were attracted to someone like Alucard from Hellsing irl I'd have ALL the psychiatric issues. But hey he's just a cartoon pimpcoat-wearing Dracula so whatever!

I used to feel like that, and then this guy came along...

It was Roronoa Zoro for me.

It's possible to ship characters and think they are so right for each other within the context of the show without being personally attracted to them.

I'm used to watching anime and not being attracted to characters, so watching live action shows and thinking well... feels a little weird to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I gotta admit--I saw the picture, read the first line and thought "Oh, crap, this going to be one of those '...and then this comic changed my mind about all that' secrets, isn't it?"

I was genuinely relieved that this was not the case.

Calvin actually strikes me as more the type who would have fantasies about fictional characters, if/when he ever gets over the whole 'romance/infatuation is gross' phase.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I was just going to say the same thing. Was the OP reading the same version of Calvin and Hobbes as I was?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
When it comes to looks alone, animated characters will never do it for me.

But their voice, the way they act etc. can go a long way in making me attracted to them.

Calvin's a guy that has no trouble taking unrealistic source material (a goofy stuffed toy) and building it into an elaborate, pervasive fantasy. I can easily see him being hot for cartoon characters once he gets a little older.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-04-01 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Why not? I like characters from adult comic books, why not adult animation?
antoj: (Default)

[personal profile] antoj 2013-04-03 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
i write for characters because i like the characters. i don't care if they're animated/from a tv show/movie/game/etc, if certain ones strike my fancy, i'm gonna write about them.

doesn't mean i'm attracted to them though.
