Is the expression "attention whore" offensive?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking of using that in a secret but I don't want to piss off anyone

If you think somebody is going to find it offensive, chances are, somebody is going to find it offensive. Whether justified or not.

Someone, somewhere will find whatever you say offensive.

It's aggressive, and I'm sure someone will find it offensive, but I don't think it's too bad.

yeah but if you put an (unintentionally) offensive term in your secret you are risking people entirely ignoring everything but that term

People will do that anyway.

Apparently I can't call their secret lame, either, because I might offend some long dead people who were actually called that outdated term.

they will, but they'll be less likely to if it's not considered widely offensive. I'm not arguing that there aren't a lot of oversensitive nitpickers around here, I'm just saying I understand why OP is worried about saying "whore"

I personally don't really like it, and I find it mildly offensive.

I find it mildly offensive, in all honesty, but not the point where I'd care enough to say something if you used it in your secret.

I find it kinda :/, though I can't express why.

To some people it might, but I see it as a legit term if you're talking about drama-cow people who seriously do that.

I used it at the beginning of some of my stories when asking for feedback. Because it's 100% true. I am an attention whore.

Re: Is the expression "attention whore" offensive?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't particularly like it, but my reasons have less to do with the words themselves than the concept itself/the contexts it's used in, so your chances of pissing me off are about the same no matter what phrase you choose.

I think people would find it offensive because it includes the word whore.

I find it more offensive that people think it's misogynistic because they associate the word whore solely with women.

Some people find "whore" offensive, yeah. I usually use "attention hog" when around those people instead.
