TMI (Menstruation/Menapause)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom's been going through a really difficult menopausal phase, and for some reason I could have sworn that she gets worse around my period, even if she's not on her own. She finally skipped one now, and then she got the next period the exact same day I got mine.

I know that the thing about women in a household syncing menstrual cycles (I think through something to do with their hormones being in close proximity) is commonly debunked as a myth, but shit I'm seriously starting to wonder if my hormones are fucking around with my mothers'.

It might be that it's more noticeable to you around your period because of your own hormones? I know a lot of things that I generally let slide bug the shit out of me right around my period and I tend to hone in on things that people do that annoy me more.

Also, you have my sympathies. My mom went through menopause a few years back and she had a rough time of it. Not something I'm looking forward to in the slightest.

Well, my mother had pretty much stopped having her period by the time I started mine, but when I started, she began having periods again. I actually haven't heard anything about synced menstrual cycles being a myth (most of what I've heard is about it NOT being a myth, tbh), but certainly my hormones affected my mother's quite a bit.

So yeah. You probably are a part of the problem. But it's not the end of the world, and after a while any effects your hormones are having will pretty much go away and she will successfully complete the transition to post-menopause.

Dunno what you've been reading, but it's not a myth. My mom and sister and i always had our periods within a day or two of each other.

Well, that's probably just coincidence then.

Sure, for all the years i had a period and lived at home (that would be five+), it as just coincidence every month.

It's possible you and your female relatives all have regular cycles and they just happen to occur around the same time. I haven't seen any concrete evidence that women's cycles sync up from living together (and it hasn't ever happened to me -- and I lived with three sisters and currently have a female roommate)

Echoing the 'it's a myth?' sentiment. My mother and I have never synced and we both have irregular periods but I we can tell when the other is having hers because we will experience cramps or other symptoms without having our own period. >:(

Strangely enough when I lived on my own I had a regular period with a lighter flow.

I dunno, it's very possible. My best friend and I seem to have synced up where she's a week ahead of me.

It's a myth
