I can only really get into music that I can understand the lyrics to. The only exception for me is opera. So yes, the music might be similar but the fact that I don't understand the language is, to me, a valid reason not to like it.

I honestly don't get this.

As someone raised in a non-English speaking country, half of the stuff I grew up listening to on the radio was in a language I didn't understand.
I would first love the music, then (maybe) look up the lyrics and try to understand them. It's actually pretty fun to look back at my teen CD colelction because now that I understand I'm like 'Wait what? Your monthly blood is all I get--- what the hell Red Hot Chili Peppers?!'

I like to sing along and I have a lot of trouble with pronunciation and other languages. I understand others are different, but it's something that takes the fun out of it for me. My attention wanders away and I find myself not enjoying it.

DA

I will listen to music in other languages as "background music", but when I'm listening to something for "real", I want to be able to understand the lyrics. Pretty much all of of the music that I love the most/has affected me the most is music whose lyrics speak to me somehow. The lyrics of certain songs has even gotten me into genres (like country) which I never would have thought I would listen to. For whatever that is worth.

Seconded. I don't really even make exceptions for opera unless I have the libretto in hand. If there are lyrics, they mean something and I need to know what they mean to enjoy the song.
