I work part-time at a grocery store where I'm friends with one of our part-time baggers. She's friendly and sweet with a surprising sarcastic streak that shows up at the strangest time and cracks me up. She's also a younger girl with some kind of developmental disorder apparent in her features and speech.

Yesterday I was helping an older customer out of the store from the register she was bagging at when a customer loudly asked the cashier at the till if he was retarded. The girl said in an equally loud, but friendly, tone "He's not, but I am!" and then resumed bagging as if nothing had happened.

Everyone stopped and looked at the customer. The lady I was helping out stopped her motorized cart and stared at him, waiting to see what he would do. Cashiers on either side of the aisle stopped scanning items. It was the quietest I've ever heard any area of the store be during a rush.

The customer looked at the cashier with this panicked wide-eyed expression and our manager came over and asked if there was a problem, to which the customer muttered something and pretended to be checking his phone, turning his back on everyone. Eventually everyone resumed their activities, albeit most conversations were more hushed, and based on all the ugly looks the topics had a shared theme. As I left I could clearly see my friend was trying to hide a grin as she was bagging.

The second I got out the door I was snickering. The older lady I was helping out joined in and then she told me someone should tell that young man he "got snapped".

He got served, and rightly so. First, for opening his mouth so lightly, second, for insulting an employee. I hate when people do that.

Oh my gosh. I have to hide my laughing so my mother doesn't ask what's up but that is just great. Wow. That is fantastic.

That is indeed, as advertised. Beautiful! Ah, me. My brief days in retail still give me nightmares. It was a scenario similar to this one that finally made me quit (no developmental delay on my end, but the customers...eh, let's just say I don't run the Standard Human 1.0 OS and leave it at that). Only I wasn't quick with the snarky comeback like your friend, because I wanted to spit nails, rip the customer's head off her shoulders, and stuff it down her own throat LOL.
