I'd like to see some recs before I judge this secret.

Too many people have told me they love japanese rap, just to send me m-flo mp3s. They're good but they're... not really what I think of as rap? It seems like a lot of the music that makes it out of Asia to the Western world is not the best music but rather the best promoted.

But agreed on One Direction. Pop in general is very formatted so there's no real distinction between something produced in the UK/US or Korea, to be honest.

Best music vs Best promoted is 100% a thing. It all has to do with the connections the producers have outside of their respective company, and who they think they're going to sell to (such as the US). Don't always (mostly) get it quite right.

I am actually going to find you recs. >8| It'll just take some consideration.

I have to agree on m-flo not really being rap, per se - not to say that Verbal can't, but m-flo's sound isn't the best example of that. "Can You Let Me Know" with DJ Deckstream and Lupe Fiasco would be a much better example.

And as someone who loves kpop and k-hiphop both, I'm gonna come right out and say that most kpoppers don't rap. That's a whooole different genre - but if you want recs, I'm happy to provide!

Electronica: TVXQ - Catch Me (Though to be true some people are turned off by their fans/history)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1RZvHtXp5E

Disco: Infinite - Paradise (Though to be true it's a heavy disco influence, which is present in a lot of songs)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7hdK5k5_3w

Dance: Shinhwa - Venus (Shinhwa have actually been "idols" for over a decade)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3sw7lxSaQA

Rock: F.T. Island - I Wish (Specifically pop-rock)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN-Gs0mY67A

Pop: Super Junior - No Other (Almost everybody is slightly pop, to be true. This song is just so purely pop musically (and I love it so 'cause I'm a great big girl))
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjGSYCylmqQ

(Contemporary) R&B: SHINee - Replay (I actually had to go make sure I had the correct thing in mind for R&B)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNL-7xwF7n0

Hiphop: Block B - Nillili Mambo (So I distinguished the difference between hiphop and rap as hiphop the instrumentation is a little more important to the song, and rap is... about the rapping for the most part.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix8yHH0lWkw

Rap: Verbal Jint - Single Male, Born In the Year of the Monkey (feat. Zico)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzJ1I_4p0N4

Even Country: 2YOON - 24/7 (It is some country crossover of the highest order, they just don't sing with a twang)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWyFerd5iHM

Also, all of those songs except for the rap song has a music video/choreography to its name, but since this is a judge on music I did audio links. There are a lot more songs I could've linked but I was trying to be as pure genre-wise as I could be.

Since you specifically mentioned rap, Korean rap is actually pretty cool. Verbal Jint is my favorite (so far). Outsider, GD&TOP, Epik High, Beenzino, Swings, Supreme Team and Dynamic Duo are just some that I've seen/listened to, and I haven't necessarily gone out of my way to search it out. There are a lot of other though and it's pretty easy to look them up if you like it, and they have a pretty strong presence on YouTube and iTunes.

May I add, to give a second opinion here.. any of Zico's solo stuff, like Battle Royal ( http://youtu.be/sdWyPfRFlx0 ) is worth a listen.

I'd also give a shout-out to Brown Eyed Girls' "Abracadabra". What a fantastic electronic dance song. (and I have NO IDEA how that music video was allowed to be made in Korea, lol!)

You made a rec list for Korean rap and didn't include Drunken Tiger or Tasha?

SHAME.
