I'm not sure the human population is ready for a character that has been explicitly shown to be heterosexual to be put into a gay relationship with no preamble. People in general don't assume that a character has a possibility of being bisexual unless they're told so, and no matter how many hints you drop people are still going to flip out because if they have already tagged someone as straight it will look like bad writing for that person to suddenly not be straight. There are a lot of people (probably the general viewing audience of most shows honestly) who won't pick up on "gay subtext" no matter what.
