I've always wondered the same thing, and I actually believe that they just want their fanfics to become real life...
But I also always wondered how "life is better" if they believe their otp are hiding their relationship from the world? I mean, this is quite a shitty situation to be in, this is real people we're talking about, don't they just want happiness for them?
I guess I'll just be forever confused.

I think the "we just want our OTP to be happy" justification quickly gets forgotten. It's not as fun, you see. Then you'd have to acknowledge that they are real people with agency who you are hurting with your behaviour.

I suppose it's like any conspiracy theory, it makes life simultaneously simpler and more exciting. I'm almost curious enough to go look at what psychologists say about conspiracy theorists in general, but psychology isn't really my area of interest. I'm sure there's something out there!
