Same. At most they'll glance at it if it's in their view, but otherwise no one asks to see what I'm reading unless I'm like, openly laughing about or otherwise loudly reacting. Even then, it's like a 50/50 chance.

Whenever I hear about kids whose parents would demand to see everything they read, or even ones whose parents wouldn't let the kid read or see anything until they saw and approved it first...mindboggling. o.O

Oh, I know! My parents had to give the ok for high-rated movies, but for books I had free reign. I can't imagine.

The most my parents ever did was tell me "please don't watch this movie until you're older, it might give you nightmares and stuff if you watch it now". Otherwise, I read and saw just about anything. (Hell, I've been watching Xena since I was a baby.)

And now I'm an adult and I see some of my mom's crazy uber!suburbanite friends, and one of the couples in particular just WILL NOT let their preteen daughter see or read anything until a.) they see/read it first and b.) give it the OK.

I usually have to struggle to hide my laughter, as I'm about 95% certain the daughter is reading other stuff without their knowledge, anyway, but still, the idea that they would even try doing something like that...just...whyyy?

Yeah, I don't know in retrospect if I should have read some of what I did, and I'm grateful I never wandered into the true-crime section of my mother's bookshelf, but nothing really scarred me for life.

(Ironically, some of the stuff that came closest to doing so wasn't adult, it was YA. Thanks again, Caroline B. Cooney.)

It used to confuse the hell out of everyone that I was perfectly fine watching a lot of shows and movies meant for adults and yet some kids movies scared me. Like, I could watch any Xena episode without a problem and yet The Black Cauldron used to freak me the fuck out.

'Scarily religious' might easily equal 'controlling'. But I'm guessing if OP is in the kind of situation where her parents don't let her lock her doors and regularly read her diary, she'd be more subtle about it.

The really bizarre part for me is that the couple in particular I mentioned aren't particularly religious.

Most likely talking out of my ass here, but I see it as a related to the 'OMG keep kids away from hard surfaces and criticism and dirt' thing. Possibly overlapping with religion, but more about over-protectiveness than that.
